Dancing with the Dead-Episode 1

By: Shirley Dias-Spycalla

Growing up in the Caribbean with Ghosts and Ghouls!

Introduction

For the most part the people of the Caribbean islands are descendents of African slaves who were forcibly brought across to the new world from West Africa in centuries past, to work on sugar or cotton plantations. The slaves brought with them their customs and folklore, including ‘Anansi’ stories, and a belief in the supernatural, seen and unseen.

Among these beliefs is the existence of Jumbies or spirits, and Zombies or walking dead. The latter are well-known phenomena on the island of Haiti, and they have been made famous by Hollywood movies such as “Night of the Living Dead” portraying flesh-eating zombies, and others of the same genre. These beliefs were also the launching pad for such legends as the Soucouyant in Trinidad & Tobago, Mama Maladie, Jack ‘o Lantern, Devil Dog, la Diablesse and Loupgarou or Lagahou in Grenada, as well as Miss Goosy in Montserrat and a bevy of ghosts, either funny or threatening.

The most frightening of all the above is the vampire-like shape shifter that drinks human blood – and I don’t mean the vampire bat found in Trinidad. Vampire bats do exist ‘down south’, but contrary to popular belief are quite harmless, except perhaps to cattle. The shape shifter is known in Grenada as la Diablesse (pronounced ‘lajabless’, literally “she-devil”), in Trinidad & Tobago as Soucouyant and in Guyana as Ole Higue or Old Hag. Funny enough these are all female, while the male counterpart appears to be the werewolf Loupgarou (pronounced ‘ligarou’), or Lagahoo and Ligahoo in other islands where the French patois is spoken.

Then there is the practice of Voodoo or Obeah – dark rites involving frenzied drumming, abandoned dancing, animal sacrifice and talking ‘in tongues’. The Voodoo Dance is still done in Haiti, Jamaica and Cuba, perhaps to ward off a failing crop, or as a cure for illness.

On the island of Montserrat, the custom of setting up a Jumbie Table during Christmas week is still practiced by some, though talking about it in public is considered taboo. The Jumbie Dance in Montserrat, similar to the Voodoo Dance but in a less dramatic way, is also used when someone is ill or to bring about success, for example, in a sporting event. Also in Montserrat, a sick child is given a Jumbie Name to ward off ill health.

This author has personally experienced several of these weird phenomena in the seven islands in which she lived, and she actually participated in a Voodoo Dance, led by a Haitian dance instructor. In this book the author attempts to share these experiences as well as her own life story with you, the intrepid reader. Remember, these are eerie stories, some funny and some downright frightening. So lock your windows and doors and make sure the lights are all turned on. Whatever you do, please listen to the old folks who whisper, “Don’ trouble Trouble, ‘till Trouble troubles you!” Enjoy!

“Our folklore is a part of our common inheritance. Without it we are divorced not only from the past but also from our own surroundings.”

G. Burchell, 1989

This anthology is dedicated to my husband Lou son Richard Graham, daughter Michelle Graham-Labarre, grandsons Mykhal and Oliviere, also to my friends, Jan, Judy, Julie and Nancy, for urging me to record my life story and these eerie tales..: ,

Chapter One

Trinidad (1943-1945)

My Mother, My Hero!

Come on in and meet my parents – Basil Fitzpatrick Dias and Edith St.Clair Dias, née Edith Brookes – a young couple from the Caribbean island of St. Kitts. World War 11 had already begun when they relocated to Trinidad and purchased a small home on Tragarete Road in Woodbrook, near to the famous Queen’s Park Oval, venue for many unforgettable cricket test matches and sporting events.

Mammy was a stay-at-home mum while Daddy took up a teaching job at a Catholic primary school in downtown Port-of-Spain. I was their second child. Helen, their first, died while almost a year old, due to cancerous growths in her stomach. From her photographs, she appeared to be a very pretty baby.

I was born a year after Helen’s death, and was always referred to as being ‘bright-eyed, bushy-tailed and inquisitive’. Well surprise, surprise, I still am!

My Mother, My Hero!

Mammy was the oldest of six children, born to Helen Brookes, née Helen McPhieters of St. John’s, Antigua, and Victor St.Clair Brookes of Basseterre, St. Kitts. Helen, my grandmother, was the daughter of a Scottish lady from Glasgow.

Mammy and her siblings were all musically talented, but her instrument of choice was the piano. She joined the Girl Guides in her early teens, and then became a Ranger in her late teens. From years of being a part of these worthwhile institutions, her character was molded so that she became a strong woman mentally and physically. She was able to think quickly, independent in spirit, sports loving, and had a great sense of humour – a true team player. This strength of character was to come into play in the event that happened next.

One evening, while she was eight month’s pregnant with me, Mammy was at home alone reading in bed, which she was wont to do until long after midnight. She was just about to turn in for the night when she became aware of stealthy sounds coming from under the bed. She realized that there was someone under there! Suddenly alert, she decided to keep on reading and see how the situation played out. This was of course very foolhardy of her. If she was ever afraid, she never admitted it.

The robber, for that’s who it was, soon realized that he was wasting his time and, cramped as he was, he decided to make a run for it. He scrambled out from under the bed. Mammy waited until the man’s head appeared and then she immediately took action. She leaped off the bed and, yelling like a banshee, threw herself on the robber’s back! He tried to shake her off, but couldn’t.

Heaving himself to his feet, the frightened robber lashed out at her and Mammy threw herself at him again and again, grabbing hold of his shirt. Buttons popped and the shirt came off. He dropped a box of matches and his flashlight (called ‘torchlight’ in those days) and fled through the door. He leaped over the wrought-iron fence, leaving pieces of his khaki trousers caught on the wrought-iron tips.

Brave person that she was, Mammy told me years later that she thought I had enjoyed the chase, even though I was unborn when the incident occurred. Well, those who know of my love for TV shows and books depicting serial killers, murder and mayhem, are not in the least bit surprised!

Trini Ghosts

It is said that children of all ages see ghosts regularly, but these appear to them as flesh-and-blood people. Children are therefore not afraid of ghosts, but only acquire a fear based on adults’ reactions to the paranormal. Many a child has had a ghostly companion as a playmate. I may have seen many spirits before the ripe old age of two and not known what they were. Sadly, I was too young to remember. I must therefore depend on my Trinidadian friends to regale me with that island’s ghost stories. Hey, two of ‘em just did!

Papa Bois

He is also called the “father of the forest” and viewed by many as the guardian of the forests. Papa Bois is against anyone who cuts more trees or kills more animals than are needed for survival.

Appearing to hunters in the form of a deer, a wild pig or a short man, he would lead them deep into the forest and then disappear so that the hunters are soon lost. He has also been known to lead them over the edge of a deep precipice!

Ma L‘eau

Ma L’eau is also called Mama D’lo, Mama Wata or, in Guyana, Mama Water. Her name is derived from the French, Maman de L’eau, meaning “mother of the water”. Not surprisingly she is said to be the wife of Papa Bois.

This mythical creature takes the form of an anaconda with the head of a woman. She is found around rivers and streams and is concerned with protecting the wildlife there. Like Papa Bois, she punishes men who harm the forest by burning trees, practising indiscriminate hunting or polluting the rivers, and she does this by marrying them! Could this perhaps be man’s explanation for being bound to a nagging wife?

Ma L’eau can also take the form of a beautiful woman seen sitting at the water’s edge, but gone in a flash of green light. Should you meet her in the forest, in order to escape, take off your left shoe, turn it backwards and leave the area walking backwards until you reach home.

Folklore of this type is also used by mothers to teach children the value of the environment and the shortcomings of greed.

La Diablesse

“Diablesse” is French for a she devil. The she-devil mostly appears as a young woman wearing very pretty clothes with a full skirt covering her feet. This is so because it is said she has one normal foot and the other is in the shape of an animal’s hoof!

Young men travelling at a late hour might meet her at the side of the road where she keeps the hoof hidden in the grass. She will invite them to go with her and, mesmerized by her beauty, they will follow her deep into the forest. If they are lucky she will disappear and they will just be lost, but on many occasions she leads them over a precipice to their death. Could there perhaps be a spot of alcohol involved here? Hmm…!

Born on the Caribbean island of Trinidad in the 1940’s, Shirley and her family lived in seven of the islands due to her father’s position in the law business. From childhood to adulthood, she found that the islands all had a ‘dark side’, far removed from the sand, sea and sun portrayed by tourism. She finally put pen to paper with her bio/anthology “Dancing with the Dead - Growing up in the Caribbean with Ghosts and Ghouls”. In addition to the witty tale of her family’s movements throughout the Caribbean, the anthology also includes all the hair-raising events experienced. Shirley currently lives on the beautiful volcanic island of Montserrat where she has been invited to tell stories at the Public Library, St Augustine Primary school and to cruise passengers. With her husband Lou and daughter Michelle, she runs Erindell Villa Guesthouse in an old villa, not exempt from its own ghosts!

Hi there, thank you so much for your feedback. Remember, it’s a bio-anthology – the story of my amazing life, growing up in the Caribbean. I grew up in seven of the Caribbean islands and found that they each have a ‘dark side’ in addition to their sand, sea and sun attributes. In many cases, this dark side of ghosts and ghouls directly affected our family, and still affects my daughter to this day. In Montserrat island where we’ve lived since 1970, it is thought that men do not die but that their spirits live on wondering in the hills. Should I climb them to find out? Nope! Shirley

My husband and i ended up being glad Chris managed to conclude his inquiry through the ideas he acquired from your own web pages. It’s not at all simplistic just to continually be handing out guides the rest have been trying to sell. And we remember we have got you to give thanks to because of that. All of the explanations you’ve made, the simple site menu, the relationships you can help to promote – it’s got most astonishing, and it’s really making our son and us imagine that the subject matter is excellent, which is quite essential. Thank you for the whole thing!

In this grand scheme of things you actually secure an A with regard to effort and hard work. Where you actually confused everybody was first in the particulars. As as the maxim goes, the devil is in the details… And it could not be more correct at this point. Having said that, allow me inform you precisely what did deliver the results. Your writing can be highly persuasive and this is probably the reason why I am making an effort to opine. I do not make it a regular habit of doing that. Second, even though I can easily see a leaps in logic you come up with, I am not really convinced of how you seem to unite the points which in turn help to make your final result. For right now I will, no doubt yield to your point but hope in the foreseeable future you connect your dots better.

I have to express some appreciation to the writer for bailing me out of such a setting. Because of surfing around throughout the world-wide-web and meeting ideas which are not productive, I was thinking my life was gone. Living minus the solutions to the difficulties you’ve sorted out by means of your good review is a serious case, and the ones that would have badly affected my entire career if I had not encountered your blog. Your personal understanding and kindness in playing with all the details was crucial. I’m not sure what I would’ve done if I had not come upon such a thing like this. I am able to at this moment look ahead to my future. Thanks a lot very much for your impressive and sensible guide. I won’t think twice to suggest your site to anybody who will need guide about this area.

Its such as you read my thoughts! You appear to know so much approximately this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I believe that you just could do with a few p.c. to drive the message home a little bit, but instead of that, this is fantastic blog. An excellent read. I’ll definitely be back.

Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this website.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s tough to get that
“perfect balance” between usability and visual appearance.
I must say that you’ve done a superb job with this.
In addition, the blog loads extremely quick for me on Internet explorer.
Excellent Blog!
