Dancing with the Dead No.6: Grenada (1951 – 1955) No.1

Grenville, Grenada

In 1951, Daddy was assigned as magistrate to a jurisdiction in Grenville, the second largest town in Grenada. I was eight, my brother Basil six and my baby brother Patrick was four. We had moved from Antigua with all our furniture packed into large wooden crates.

Traveling with us was our nanny, Helen Dore, whom my parents had hired when we were leaving St. Kitts for Antigua in 1949. I have no idea why, but we all called her “Dore”, rather than by her first name. She was like one of the family. As the children grew older, Dore’s responsibilities changed to that of a housekeeper rather than that of a nanny.

Bungalow on a Cocoa Estate

Grenville was truly a country town with very few paved roads and no electricity. The owner of the estate house that the Government leased for our family had had the foresight to install a generator to light the house in the evenings. The generator was housed in a small shed off to the side of the yard and, every evening just before dark, Daddy would start it up so that we had the luxury of electric lights until about ten o’clock or bedtime. Surrounded by a large cacao plantation as we were, the lights in our house shone like a beacon, while most other residents in the area only had candles or kerosene lanterns.

In addition to the generator, the house also had Tilly lamps that were bright gas-powered lanterns, a kerosene stove and an icebox in lieu of a refrigerator. Every two days, a delivery man brought to the house on his donkey cart a huge block of ice that was placed at the bottom of the ‘icebox’. Removable shelves and a vacuum-sealed, hinged lid ensured a safe cold storage for food. Underneath the contraption, there was a drainage outlet for the melting ice and this had to be emptied frequently as it filled with water.

The house also had a free standing larder – a large, wire-mesh-sided cupboard with front opening doors like a kitchen cupboard. This larder however was up on four tall legs, each of which stood in a can containing water, in order to discourage ants from invading the foodstuff, especially the sugar. Caribbean ants however have ‘street smarts’ and were always able to find a way in. I noticed that some of the ants sacrificed their lives by drowning. Their little bodies floated on the surface, while the second wave of ants crossed the water comfortably by walking on the dead ants. Ingenuous!

The Estate

On the grounds of the estate lived Vera Wells, the local postmistress. Every afternoon after school and on Saturday mornings, I would help Miss Wells to sort the mail. In return, she taught me how to knit, crochet and do tatting. Seemed like a fair exchange to me!

Also nearby were many ‘sweat boxes’ where the cacao pods were stored until the pulp was ready to be extracted. The cacao pulp was then processed further and made into cocoa sticks – finger sized concentrated cacao. These were sold in the public markets in Grenvilla and St. George’s, and indeed all over the Caribbean where it was used in thousands of homes to make the morning breakfast drink called ‘cocoa-tea’. Every morning, the cook made ‘cocoa-tea’ for the family. In a further refining process at overseas factories, a powdery cocoa was made and, from there, chocolates were made. Yum!

There were also huge drying trays on rollers where nutmegs and mace, the outer red covering, were laid out to dry. The nutmegs were either sold whole, or packaged in a ground form similar to that of black pepper. In this latter state, it was used to garnish exotic drinks like rum punches. It was the estate workers’ job to pick the cacao pods and nutmegs and process them through these initial stages. There were several spice trees in our yard as well, and our cook always used these spices in cooking and baking.

Grenada is not called the “Isle of Spice” for nothing.

School Days in Grenville

Basil and I were duly enrolled at the St. Andrew’s Methodist Primary School in Grenville, under Headmaster Strachan, a man adept at twisting the Ministry of Education around his finger to get what he wanted for the school. The education there was superb and the children were well grounded in not only the three R’s, but also in History, English, Geography and Comprehension or General Knowledge.

Every morning before assembly, teachers inspected the children’s hands and nails to make sure they were clean, and also made sure that their hair was neatly combed. Assembly started with a prayer, followed by recitation of the entire back cover of the standard exercise book starting with the multiplication tables, weights and measures, the linear scale, etc., all recited by the student body in a monotone. Remember, there were no calculators in those days; therefore none of us were dependent on them. I still recall the cadence, “One times one is one, two ones are two, three ones are three; etc., right up to twelve twelves are one hundred and forty-four!

Rudeness to a teacher or disrupting a class resulted in a couple of lashes with a leather strap on the palm of the hand.

Gross misconduct, usually by the boys, got them ‘six of the best’ on their behinds with Mr. Strachan wielding the leather strap. The boys scheduled to receive lashes, usually wore six to eight pairs of underpants under their school pants to ‘soften the blows’. You see, corporal punishment in schools was the way of life in the Caribbean. No child was injured, but there was shame involved and he or she thought twice before repeating the infraction.

Throughout the region, unlike today, students respected and obeyed their teachers. To top it off, if a child got lashes in school, he or she could expect to receive more of the same from a caring parent. Yes – caring! There is an old adage that says, “Spare the rod – spoil the child”.

On a fine day, many of the classes were held outdoors in the shade of spreading tamarind or flamboyant trees. The teacher took the blackboard out and the children took their chairs or we opted to sit on the grass. There were cool tropical breezes gently waving the leaves and flowers, and birds soared high up in the sky, calling to each other. Indeed, I think we were pretty lucky to have experienced this type of schooling. Recess was a fun time too, and children of all ages were either playing marbles, skipping, called ‘jump rope’, spinning colourful wooden tops or playing hide and seek or tag. Those were truly wonderful days.

My Second Love

In English class one day, our teacher taught us how to write letters and our class work involved writing a letter to another classmate of our choice.

There was a boy of my own age in the class called Donat Creft, on whom I had a huge crush. Hitherto, all I’d ever done was stare at him with puppy eyes, but here was my chance to put my feelings into writing. Big mistake!

At the end of thirty minutes, the teacher called a stop and spent the last half hour calling on children to read their letters to the class. My heart sank and I hoped I wouldn’t be called up to the front. How does guilt look? Well the guilty look on my face was like a beacon and the teacher called me up to read my letter.

Groan! How embarrassing! I got a couple of lashes in my hand, not because I’d written a love letter, but because I’d misspelled two words – ‘insignificant’ and ‘occasional’. What those works were doing in a love letter, I couldn’t tell you, but there they were. Where was Spell Check when I needed it? The teasing that followed during the following days was unbearable, but I’ve never forgotten how to spell those two works. This was the first time I knew what ‘turning red’ truly meant!

The Devil Dog

This story involves Marie, the cook. This is not her real name but, for the life of me, I cannot remember what it was. She hailed from a nearby village and preferred to live at her own home rather than occupy the purpose-built maid’s quarters at the rear of the house.

Each morning, Marie took a short cut from her village through the cacao plantation to get to our house in time to prepare breakfast. For almost a year she used this short cut without incident. Then, one Saturday morning (and I remember it well because I didn’t have to dress for school, but was in the bedroom playing with Claire, my new doll), we all heard a high-pitched scream coming from among the thick forest of cacao trees.

Suddenly Marie shot out from the trees screaming, hands in the air, hair askew, her dress rumpled and dirty from having fallen, looking very much like an electrocuted cartoon cat! She was bawling hysterically and yelling something about a devil dog. You can imagine that it took a while before she calmed down enough to tell my parents what had happened to her in the forest.

At about 6:30am, Marie had been on the path walking towards our house when, along the way, she met a man standing on the path blocking her way. Being polite and thinking he was one of the estate workers, Marie said good morning and stepped around the man to continue on her way. She noted that he did not reply nor did he move to let her pass. A little further on, Marie said, she looked over her shoulder and, to her horror, saw not the figure of a man, but a monstrous black dog with glowing red eyes!

The dog, as large as a young donkey, was following her without a sound in spite of the layers of dried cacao leaves that carpeted the ground. That’s when Marie knew that the man she had greeted moments before was not human. Fortunately for her, she was only about thirty yards from the house and safety; because who knows what the creature might have done had it caught up to her.

A devil dog is a deceased person who, when he or she was alive, chose to ‘cut a deal’ with Satan through black magic, usually for personal gain. After the person dies, his or her spirit ‘comes back’ to walk the earth as an undead. As a shape-shifter, it has the ability to change from human form to that of a fierce black dog, sometimes as big as a donkey. If, in the shape of a human, it is spoken to first, it attacks the person who speaks to it. Victims have been known to go insane or die of fright.

In dim lighting, it is not easy to see that the feet of the undead do not touch the ground, but they would appear to be floating an inch or two above the ground. In some cases, their feet are turned backwards instead of forwards, or are cloven like those of a goat.

On looking back, I could say that Marie had suffered from indigestion, causing her imagination to run wild, however the devil dog is a well-known phenomenon in Grenada and in some other islands of the Caribbean. It is also mentioned as a creature to be feared on the moors of England and Scotland. Parents have been known to use the existence of this creature and others to warn children not to stay out after dark. In Marie’s case, she never took that shortcut again!

Mama Maladie

Another legendary figure in Grenada is “Mama Maladie”, the spirit of an ancient hag who seeks the souls of newborn babies and young children. Today, doctors could explain to distraught mothers about a baby dying as a result of crib death, but that cause of death was not known back in those days. Rather than look for a logical reason, some Grenadian mothers would swear that Mama Maladie had come for their infants.

In past centuries and even today, there were witches’ covens whose members used to sacrifice, newborn babies in their unholy ceremonies, the blood of the innocents being considered pure and thus most powerful.

Covens are still very active in England, Europe and Vancouver in Canada, among other countries. Some witches hail from the idle rich, or are professionals who hold high positions in society. With pride they have ‘come out of the closet’ to practice openly. Modern witches have formed unions, hold conventions, and have demanded their ‘rights’ to practice their religion – the dark arts.

Whether or not Mama Maladie really existed, children dared not disobey their parents. No matter what activity children were taking part in, as soon as the sun dipped below the horizon, every child in Grenada headed home to safety. Modern children of course laugh at these things, but their parents and grandparents nod their heads wisely. They know better!

Born on the Caribbean island of Trinidad in the 1940’s, Shirley and her family lived in seven of the islands due to her father’s position in the law business. From childhood to adulthood, she found that the islands all had a ‘dark side’, far removed from the sand, sea and sun portrayed by tourism. She finally put pen to paper with her bio/anthology “Dancing with the Dead - Growing up in the Caribbean with Ghosts and Ghouls”. In addition to the witty tale of her family’s movements throughout the Caribbean, the anthology also includes all the hair-raising events experienced. Shirley currently lives on the beautiful volcanic island of Montserrat where she has been invited to tell stories at the Public Library, St Augustine Primary school and to cruise passengers. With her husband Lou and daughter Michelle, she runs Erindell Villa Guesthouse in an old villa, not exempt from its own ghosts!

Thanks for expressing your ideas. One thing is that college students have a choice between government student loan and a private education loan where it’s easier to go with student loan debt consolidation reduction than in the federal student loan.

Appreciating the time and effort you put into your website and in depth information you provide. It’s nice to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same out of date rehashed information. Great read! I’ve saved your site and I’m adding your RSS feeds to my Google account.

Hey, honestly your site is coming along :-), but I had a question – it’s a bit slow. Have you thought about using a different host like propel? It’d help your visitors stick around longer = more profit long term anyway. There’s a decent review on it by this guy who uses gtmetrix to test different hosting providers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6s0ciJI4W4 and the whole video has a bunch of gold in it, worth checking out.

Have you ever thought about including a little bit more than just your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable and all. But imagine if you added some great visuals or video clips to give your posts more, “pop”! Your content is excellent but with pics and clips, this site could certainly be one of the very best in its niche. Terrific blog!

Today, taking into consideration the fast way of life that everyone is having, credit cards get this amazing demand throughout the economy. Persons from every area are using credit card and people who aren’t using the card have arranged to apply for even one. Thanks for spreading your ideas in credit cards.

You really make it appear really easy together with your presentation but I in finding this topic to be really something that I feel I’d never understand. It sort of feels too complex and extremely huge for me. I’m having a look forward on your next submit, I?¦ll attempt to get the dangle of it!

Thank you so much for your feedback. I’m sorry if I scared you, but I’m only writing what occurred in my life from birth to where I am now, living on the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean. I assure you that ‘voodoo’ and ‘obeah’ do exist, so do the undead. No amount of naysaying can change that. Unfortunately. Do your own research. Shirley

Hi there, thank you so much for your feedback. I didn’t write this bio-anthology to be informative or entertaining, but so that I wouldn’t forget my past. You see, I grew up in seven Caribbean islands due to my father’s job in law enforcement, and I found that each one had a ‘dark side’ in addition to its sand, sea and sun attributes. I now live on the tiny island of Montserrat and am loving it. I hope you will also enjoy the other chapters of my bio-anthology. Shirley

Interesting article. It’s very unfortunate that over the last several years, the travel industry has already been able to to tackle terrorism, SARS, tsunamis, bird flu, swine flu, along with the first ever true global economic collapse. Through everything the industry has really proven to be solid, resilient along with dynamic, finding new strategies to deal with misfortune. There are continually fresh complications and chance to which the market must just as before adapt and act in response.

I have to express thanks to the writer just for rescuing me from this type of challenge. Just after researching throughout the world wide web and getting advice which were not pleasant, I believed my life was well over. Existing devoid of the approaches to the issues you’ve fixed all through your short article is a serious case, as well as ones that would have in a wrong way affected my entire career if I hadn’t encountered your web page. That training and kindness in maneuvering all the pieces was vital. I am not sure what I would have done if I hadn’t come across such a thing like this. I’m able to now look ahead to my future. Thanks a lot so much for this specialized and effective help. I will not think twice to endorse the blog to anyone who needs support about this topic.

Also, every afternoon at 5pm I post six silly cartoons on my FB page (Shirley Spycalla). This started during the Covid lockdowns and cheered me up. I didn’t realise how much they cheered up other people too. Shirley

Thanks for this excellent article Yet another thing to mention is that almost all digital cameras are available equipped with some sort of zoom lens that allows more or less of any scene to get included through ‘zooming’ in and out These kinds of changes in focus length tend to be reflected inside viewfinder and on massive display screen on the back of this camera

With havin so much written content do you ever run into any problems of plagorism or copyright violation? My website has a lot of completely unique content I’ve either created myself or outsourced but it seems a lot of it is popping it up all over the internet without my authorization. Do you know any solutions to help stop content from being stolen? I’d truly appreciate it.

I now live on the tiny island of Montserrat, where my daughter actually danced with a dead man without knowing it! Shirley
