Anansi and the Dispersal of Wisdom
Although Anansi was well aware of his keen mind and intelligence, it was not enough. He wanted more knowledge.
As a result, he decided to go about gathering all the wisdom that he could find and keep it in a safe place.
With his diligence and persistence, Anansi had soon collected all of the wisdom that could be found throughout the world and proceeded to seal them inside of a pot.
Even though he was able to successfully seal all the wisdom away, Anansi was still worried and concerned that all this wisdom was just not safe enough.
After wrestling with this concern, Anansi decided to secretly move the pot of wisdom to a tall, silk cotton tree.
Anansi had a younger son named Ntikuma. Unbeknownst to Anansi, Ntikuma saw his father’s secretive movements and followed him at a safe distance behind to see what he was doing.
As Ntikuma observed his father, it became very evident to him that the pot Anansi was carrying was way too big to be handled by the spider alone. This became especially evident as Anansi made an attempt to climb the silk cotton tree with the pot.
After several attempts to climb the silk cotton tree and failing miserably, Anansi tried, yet again, this time tying the pot in front of him.
The pot only obscured Anansi and made him simply slip down the trunk of the tree instead of climbing up. As one could guess. Each attempted failure caused Anansi to become frustrated and increasingly infuriated.
His son, Ntikuma laughed at his father saying, “Why don’t you tie the pot behind you, that way you will be able to grip the tree?”
Surprised by his son’s voice and the fact that Ntikuma was right, the pot suddenly slipped from Anansi’s grasp and crashed to the ground.
All of the wisdom that Anansi had taken time to collect had now spilled out of the pot.
What was worse was that, just then, a storm arrived and caused a mighty rain throughout the forest. As a result, the resulting deluge of rainwater covered the ground and simply washed the entire collection of wisdom away from the bottom of the silk cotton tree into a nearby river stream.
Unfortunately, the currents in the nearby river stream took Anansi’s collection of wisdom right out to sea. Because the sea feeds just about every corner of the world, Anansi’s collection of wisdom was spread throughout the entire world.
This, of course, ruined Anansi’s plan and made his goal impossible; resulting in a very angry spider.
In his rage, Anansi chased his son home through the rain. When he finally caught his son, Anansi had an epiphany that made him accept his loss.
He looked at his son and thought to himself What is the use of all that wisdom if a young child still needs to put you right?
In any case, Anansi failed to steal the world’s wisdom that day, and, instead, there’s a little of it that lives in all of us!
