Dancing with the Dead-Episode 2

Dancing with the Dead – By: Shirley Spycalla

By: Shirley Dias-Spycalla

Growing up in the Caribbean with Ghosts and Ghouls!

Soucouyant

This creature is the Trinidad and Tobago version of the vampire. Again a female, she is usually a very old woman in a village; in fact a hag. Some villagers say you can see the evil and wickedness in her and just know she is a soucouyant! At night she sheds her skin which she hides in a mortar and flies out of the window, travelling through the night sky as a ball of fire. This sounds like it could be the legendary “Jack ‘o Lantern”? I wonder!

A victim knows he has been “sucked” by the soucouyant, as he will see two tiny raised welts side by side, as though made by fangs, and his body will feel weak, obviously from loss of blood. To her chagrin, the entity must get back home and put on her skin before the sun rises. A variation of this story appears in the Grenada chapter.

There are some simple tests to determine who is a soucouyant in the village. One can throw rice or other grains at a crossroads. The soucouyant must stop and pick up everyone and count them. If you suspect the identity of the person, you can sneak into her house after she has left it, and put salt and pepper on her shed skin so that it will burn her when she attempts to put it back on.

Although my bio/anthology does not include Guyana, the South American, English-speaking country, a story appeared in 2007 in the Caribbean Net News, an internet newspaper. Since it involves a village woman believed to be an “Ole Higue” (old hag). I include it here, verbatim:

Murder Suspects Arraigned in Guyana

Published on Saturday, May 5, 2007

By Gordon French, Guyana Correspondent Caribbean Net News

GEORGETOWN, Guyana:

Three people have been charged in Guyana for killing a woman they claimed was a blood-sucking evil spirit. Two men and a woman were on Wednesday arraigned for murder at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court following the brutal death of the woman.

Rayon Bobb, 28, a cane harvester, and Alita Roberts, 25, both of Bare Root, and Roland Spencer, 41, a contractor, appeared before Magistrate Yohance Cave and were remanded until May 10. They were charged with the beating death of Radika Singh, a 55-year-old woman of Good Hope.

Ms Singh was surrounded by villagers and beaten to death last Saturday in Bare Root, a small African-Guyanese community in eastern Guyana, because villagers believed she was an evil spirit, similar to a vampire, which sucks the blood of people.

Villagers told Caribbean Net News that the woman appeared to be a dark ball with an occasional flicker of fire, traits associated with an “Ole Higue,” as told in Guyanese folklore. However, the woman’s relatives have produced documents confirming that the woman was mentally ill and may have wandered into the village, located some seven miles from her home.

According to folklore, the Ole Higue lives during the day among the villagers, but at night this seemingly harmless old woman removes her skin, places it gently in a calabash and travels across the sky as a ball of fire, heading to the home of her intended victim. To enter the home she shrinks herself and enters through the keyhole.

It is believed that the easiest way to catch an Ole Higue is to spill rice grains on the ground in front of your front door. Before the Ole Higue can enter the house, she will be compelled to count every rice grain. When the home owner awakes the next morning they should find a tired Ole Higue, still trying to pick up the rice. According to that country’s folklore, at this point in time she must be beaten to death with a special broom.

At the scene of the incident, police found a manicole broom and grains of rice. A post mortem was performed on the body of the deceased and her cause of death was given as ‘haemorrhage due to blunt trauma to head’!

Lagahoo

This is the Trinidad & Tobago version of the werewolf. A person is said to become such a creature by black magic and not by being bitten as in European folklore. You cannot see a lagahoo, but you can hear it dragging the heavy chains it wears around its body. I believe that this entity may well be the male version of a soucouyant.

To see a lagahoo (though I can’t imagine why you would ever want to), take the yampee or sleep mucus out of the corner of a dog’s eye and put it in your own eye. Look through a keyhole at midnight. Exactly whose keyhole is yet undetermined. I would not advise anyone to try this.

The Curse of Caura Dam

Given its name by the Nepuyo Carib Amerindians who originally occupied the area, the Caura Valley is a naturalist’s dream and a hunter’s mecca. Its name means “heavily wooded area”.

When residents in the surrounding areas were forced to move from their homes to facilitate the construction of a dam across the valley, the village church was also slated to be demolished. The priest of the day apparently stood his ground and put a curse on the dam. All construction on the Caura Dam stopped immediately, never to continue, and no one seems to know the reason.

Duennes

These are the spirits of children who died before they were baptised. It is said that their fate is to roam the forests doing pranks and leading children away from the safety of their backyards at dusk. The unfortunate children are then abandoned in the forests.

The duennes are said to be often found on river banks and are sustained on a diet of crab meat or young corn.

These creatures are sexless and faceless; however they do have small round mouths. Large mushroom-shaped hats cover their hair which is worn in the form of pigtails or in a natural state “dada hair”. Their feet are turned backwards.

To prevent duennes from luring your children away, do not shout out their names, as the duennes will use it to call them. Like Mama Maladie in the Grenada chapter and Miss Goosie in the Montserrat chapter, this is a typical scare tactic that mothers use to prevent their children from straying too far from home.

Mermaids

These creatures are associated with Tobago, Trinidad’s sister island, where the Caribbean Sea meets the Atlantic Ocean. They are said to be found around Bird of Paradise Island, St. Giles island, Misty Marble Island, Ance Gouleme, Ance Brisant, and around the coast by Speyside and Fat Hog Bay. It is believed that they have the power to grant wishes, however one should be aware that they are ‘fallen spirits’.

Mermaids really should be called mermen, as they are males and their spirits appear as kings and warriors of times gone by. There are no females among them; however they supposedly mate with the fairy maids.

Fairy Maids

Fairy maids are associated with watercourses on land, such as caves behind waterfalls, secret mountain pools, underneath some bridges where the rivers run deep and swift, and even near some waterwheels. These creatures are beautiful with long hair and one tiny foot in the shape of a deer’s hoof.

They have the power to make mortal men smitten with them while they steal their shadow and leave them demented. To get back his shadow, the afflicted must go to the river accompanied by friends and family as well as a “workman” or obeah man. He must then plead for his shadow to be restored. When the fairy maid obliges, the young man must leave the water’s edge and not look back.

It is said that fairy maids can also have relationships with humans. In order to discontinue such a relationship, two offerings of shoes must be made. One pair is to be burnt on the beach to invoke the fairy maid to rise out of the water. Of course it is assumed that she will do so.

When she appears, the unfortunate young man should ask her if she has to be paid for past services. Her answer will then be, “Nothing but this pair of shoes.” Immediately the second pair of shoes should be thrown into the water. Again it is assumed that the young man will be free of her influence. Sigh! When will men ever learn?

Phantoms

On lonely country roads, some travellers have reported the ghostly figure of a man with long legs as tall as trees, walking across the road or standing with his legs straddling either side of the road, causing an obstruction just as the traveller approaches. It is felt that the reason is to scare drivers and cause them to run off the road. From the description, the ghost or ghosts appear to resemble Moko Jumbies as in the Antigua chapter. The warning given here is, DON’T SPEED!!

The Legend of the La Brea Pitch Lake

One of four such ‘lakes’ in the world, this pitch lake is located in the village of La Brea on the southwestern peninsula of Trinidad. Shaped like an inverted cone, it has a centre that is reported to be 75 metres deep. It can be thought of as a black hole that pulls things into itself. It looks like an enormous parking lot, but is actually a lake of asphalt that emits gases and a strong smell of sulphur.

As one would expect, there is folklore associated with the Pitch Lake by the Chaima Indians. They believed that it was formed as a punishment by their winged god who caused the earth to open up and emit pitch that swallowed up the entire village. This was said to have happened because during celebrations after victory over a rival tribe, they cooked and ate the sacred hummingbirds that were believed to hold the spirits of their ancestors. Whatever the reason, the warning is clear not to approach too near to the lake.

The Musician

One evening, a young man was on his way home from playing his guitar at a friend’s house. The rehearsal had gone on pretty late. On the way, he came across an old man sitting at the side of the road, holding a guitar in his hands and softly strumming the instrument.

The young man stopped to listen, recognizing a master musician. Then he too started to play in harmony with the old man. It was wonderful. They played on and on until the young man called it quits, remembering he had to go to work the next day.

In saying goodbye to the old man, the young man thanked him profusely for the experience and lauded his playing. The old man smiled and said, “Young man, I enjoyed playing with you too. If you think I play well now, you should have heard me when I was alive!”

Well, like “Tingalay” in the Paul Keens-Douglas’ story “The Driving Lesson”, the young man jumped six feet off the ground, twenty feet across, and his feet never touched the ground again until he was inside his own front door!

Born on the Caribbean island of Trinidad in the 1940’s, Shirley and her family lived in seven of the islands due to her father’s position in the law business. From childhood to adulthood, she found that the islands all had a ‘dark side’, far removed from the sand, sea and sun portrayed by tourism. She finally put pen to paper with her bio/anthology “Dancing with the Dead - Growing up in the Caribbean with Ghosts and Ghouls”. In addition to the witty tale of her family’s movements throughout the Caribbean, the anthology also includes all the hair-raising events experienced. Shirley currently lives on the beautiful volcanic island of Montserrat where she has been invited to tell stories at the Public Library, St Augustine Primary school and to cruise passengers. With her husband Lou and daughter Michelle, she runs Erindell Villa Guesthouse in an old villa, not exempt from its own ghosts!

Well, in the chapter on Montserrat, my daughter did indeed dance with a dead man not knowing he was dead. He was a British engineer who had worked in our public works dept. For some reason his dead wife also haunted our house!

I do love the way you have presented this particular difficulty and it really does present me some fodder for thought. However, through what I have personally seen, I just simply wish as the remarks pack on that people today keep on issue and not start on a soap box involving the news of the day. Anyway, thank you for this excellent piece and though I do not concur with the idea in totality, I respect your point of view.

I grew up in seven Caribbean islands due to my father’s job in law enforcement and found that each one had a ‘dark side’ in addition to its sand, sea and sun attributes. I now live on the tiny island of Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory with an active volcano and am loving it. I hope you will also enjoy the other chapters of my bio-anthology, “Dancing with The Dead”, so-called because my daughter actually danced with a dead man without knowing it! Shirley

You can certainly see your skills in the work you write. The arena hopes for even more passionate writers like you who are not afraid to say how they believe. Always follow your heart. “Until you’ve lost your reputation, you never realize what a burden it was.” by Margaret Mitchell.

Thank you so much for your awesome review. I’m not writing for fame and fortune, but so that I won’t forget my past. Having seen my husband of 32 years forget his entire past from dementia and all his glory days playing American football, made me sit down and start writing. I do so hope you will enjoy the other chapters, also the things to do to ward off evil, the miracles that happened, etc. etc. Be safe! Shirley
