Dancing with the Dead No.7: Grenada (1951 – 1955) No. 2

Snakes and Serpents!

Sparsely populated in the early 1950’s and covered with dense foliage, the suburbs of Grenville had many serpents and snakes that were very large, but mostly non-poisonous.

One evening after supper, our family went out onto the veranda to amuse ourselves. Mammy was sitting with her back to the railing that was entwined with alamanda bushes, locally called yellow bells. Suddenly there was a slight movement in the foliage and Daddy saw the head of a serpent emerge, inches from Mammy’s head. He quietly said, “Edith, don’t move!”, then he rushed inside to get his revolver. Returning, he aimed at the serpent and pulled the trigger. He pulled the dead snake out of the bushes and we saw it was at least six feet long.

On another occasion, I went into the bathroom, locking the door behind me and sat on the toilet. Suddenly a black snake that had been lying in the corner behind the door uncoiled itself and reared up. I froze. Then I screamed for help, all the while climbing up onto the back of the toilet. Daddy had to break the door in to get at the snake and rescue me!

I need to digress here and explain that Daddy, being a lawman, was licenced to carry firearms even though other citizens could not. He owned a pellet or BB gun and a revolver that he kept cleaned and locked away along with the bullets. He practiced shooting using empty cans perched on a rock, and he even taught Basil and me to shoot the BB gun!

The Wake

Funerals are big social events in the Caribbean, and I would almost swear that the people of the region have more funeral clothes in their closet that any other! However, in some people’s minds, the highlight of any funeral is the wake or funeral party. In some cases, the wake is held on the eve of the funeral rather than after, as was the case in this story.

When we lived in Grenville there was no morgue, therefore the departed had to be kept at home until the funeral, which invariably was held on the next day. More often than not, the burial took place in the yard at the back of the house, rather than at a public cemetery!

Friends and family of the deceased would gather at the house of the bereaved, bringing bottles of liquor and dishes of food. Sometimes, because of the excessive amount of alcohol at the wake, what should have been a solemn event turned into a wild, wailing party, with lots of bawdiness.

At one particular wake, the deceased was laid out on the dining table, decked in his Sunday best. Drinking and loud wailing went on all around him and this went on for hours until a neighbour, disturbed by the noise, called the police.

Not knowing it was a wake, the police stormed the house with batons raised and, as expected, met with resistance. Blows landed on everyone including the dead man who eventually fell off the table onto the floor, looking like a bedraggled and drunken man. The wake finally broke up as people staggered off, bruised and battered, to their homes. This was a wake that would long be remembered in Grenville. I would say that the deceased had a rip-roaring sendoff, wouldn’t you?

Saying Goodbye to Grenville

I was about to sit the common entrance and scholarship examination for admittance to a secondary school of my choice, when Daddy was transferred to St. George’s, the capital of Grenada. Moving to a larger jurisdiction was a good thing for my parents because it meant a larger salary and more perks!

It was with much ado that my family moved to ‘Villa B’, one of the two government-owned bungalows on Woolwich Road, overlooking the capital and the carenage (French for ‘careenage’ and pronounced like ‘fromage’).

Because the exam was still a few weeks off, I was left behind to board with a family whose stepdaughter was my age, and who was also sitting the same exam. It appears I was a bright child in those days, because I placed third among all the children sitting the exam.

I was ten when I was awarded the government scholarship that included tuition and books, and would be valid until my eighteenth birthday or on completion of my “A-Levels” (equivalent to the SAT’s), whichever came first. Since I had the choice, and as my parents had already moved to St. George’s, I chose to attend St. Joseph’s Convent on Church Street in St. George’s.

School Days at the Convent

At the start of the 1954 school year, when I was eleven, I joined the other smartly uniformed girls in Form I at the Convent, located just above the Roman Catholic Cathedral on Church Street. I was eleven. In the following year, Basil was enrolled at Presentation College, the Catholic school for boys just above the convent.

The girls wore a navy-blue pleated skirt in serge, a white, cotton, short-sleeved blouse with the diagonally striped school tie and school crest pinned to the breast pocket, white socks and white ‘tennis’ shoes or sneakers, also called ‘washicong’ in some of the other islands.

The standard of education was good; however I loved the music lessons as much as I hated the catechism classes. For one, I asked too many questions that the nuns couldn’t or wouldn’t answer, except the cop out answer that I should believe and not question the church’s teachings. My curiousity got me into trouble many times, then I would have the Doubting Thomas passage quoted to me, followed by the order to learn by heart several verses of the bible. Ouch! I think I made up my mind then that I was NOT going to become a nun!

The Ghostly Nun

On the Convent grounds were the old classrooms that were still being used by the older students. Every afternoon, before we could go to the recreation grounds to play netball and rounders (today called soft ball), it was our duty to lock up the classrooms. I suppose this was to teach us a sense of responsibility.

One classroom in particular always gave trouble to close up. The window latches were good and shut securely, but as soon as the room was secured, all the windows would slowly open by themselves. The girls would have to re-enter and close the windows all over again. This was an almost daily occurrence.

One day, I was in the group of students assigned to lock up that particular classroom. As usual we did a good job of it and were just locking the door, when the windows started to open, one by one, starting with the window closest to the door. I was the first one to go back into the room, and I had started forward to re-close the first window when, out of the corner of my eye, I saw someone who appeared to be a nun, dressed in full black habit with a white wimple, opening one of the windows. I called out to her and she suddenly faded away until there was no one there!

Next day during recess, I decided to ‘bell the cat’. I approached Mother Immaculata, known to all the students as ‘The Dragon’ because we were all afraid of her. That day however, Mother Immaculata was in a fairly good mood and she told me that what I had seen was the spirit of an old nun who had died in the convent. It was the responsibility of this old nun to open up the classrooms every morning. For some reason, she had not moved on and was still carrying out her duties. The other nuns knew about her, but felt that sooner rather than later she would be taken up to Heaven and the haunting would stop. Has it? I wonder!

Born on the Caribbean island of Trinidad in the 1940’s, Shirley and her family lived in seven of the islands due to her father’s position in the law business. From childhood to adulthood, she found that the islands all had a ‘dark side’, far removed from the sand, sea and sun portrayed by tourism. She finally put pen to paper with her bio/anthology “Dancing with the Dead - Growing up in the Caribbean with Ghosts and Ghouls”. In addition to the witty tale of her family’s movements throughout the Caribbean, the anthology also includes all the hair-raising events experienced. Shirley currently lives on the beautiful volcanic island of Montserrat where she has been invited to tell stories at the Public Library, St Augustine Primary school and to cruise passengers. With her husband Lou and daughter Michelle, she runs Erindell Villa Guesthouse in an old villa, not exempt from its own ghosts!

A large percentage of of whatever you mention is supprisingly accurate and that makes me ponder why I had not looked at this with this light previously. Your piece really did turn the light on for me personally as far as this specific issue goes. However at this time there is 1 factor I am not too comfy with and whilst I make an effort to reconcile that with the actual central idea of your issue, let me see just what all the rest of your subscribers have to say.Well done.

Thank you so much for your feedback. I didn’t write this bio-anthology to be informative or entertaining, but so that I wouldn’t forget my past as my husband who died from dementia did. I grew up in seven Caribbean islands due to my father’s job in law enforcement and found that each one had a ‘dark side’ in addition to its sand, sea and sun attributes. I now live on the tiny island of Montserrat, a British Overseas Territory with an active volcano and am loving it. I hope you will also enjoy the other chapters of my bio-anthology, “Dancing with The Dead”, so-called because my daughter actually danced with a dead man without knowing it! Shirley

to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding know-how so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
