Music Festival
Mother Agnes, Trinidadian born, was responsible for the music classes at the Convent. When she discovered my talent for singing, she kept me going long after the class period ended until, one day, I nearly fainted from exhaustion. Then she decided to enter me for the island’s annual music festival, singing an old English madrigal, “Flocks are sporting, doves are courting”, etc. Can’t remember the title, but those were the opening lines.
I don’t think that madrigals are known for their inflections, so nervously going onstage, I belted out the song and hoped for the best. To my great surprise, I must have done it right because I came first in my age group and won a nicely printed certificate and a small 24K gold pendant in the shape of a boot!
After that, Mother Agnes put me to sing with the senior school choir and, at the next school graduation, we sang Strauss’s “Blue Danube” with me standing on a footstool in the front row!
Sadly Mother Agnes had to leave the Convent and return to Trinidad when her mother died and there was no one else to care for her younger siblings. How can I ever forget her?
All Soul’s Day
One of the days that were celebrated in Grenada was All Soul’s Day, the day after All Saint’s Day, at the end of October. I have a feeling that this day coincides with the American “Halloween” on the 31st. It was well known that, on this particular day, all the jumbies or spirits came out of their graves and roamed the land.
On this day, the island people visited the graves of their family and friends, laying flowers and saying prayers over the graves, or simply ‘talking’ with the dead. Mind you, this was not a public holiday, so most persons went after work or in the evening. For Catholics, a candle-lit mass was held in the cemetery during the evening hours.
Another item carried to the cemeteries was called ‘Ashum’ – a mixture of finely ground corn and brown sugar. It supposedly made one sneeze, hence the name. I never found out the reason for this; however children loved it. In fact in the days following All Souls, the children in our neighbourhood made and ate a similar concoction using cocoa powder and brown sugar. It was so good we didn’t need to buy candy from the store. Only thing is, our mothers often wondered where the cocoa powder was disappearing to!
The Boat
During the summer holidays, the children in the neighbourhood got together to play. We climbed trees and swung from branch to branch. We made up skits and acted in them, then invited all the parents to be ‘in the audience’. We made carnival masks using mud molds, papier-mâché and water-colour paints. We made kites and flew them. Finally, we decided to build a boat.
Each of us brought bits of mostly old wood and mostly bent nails and we borrowed hammers from our homes. What a racket there was with six children pounding nails to straighten them, then putting together a boat. A couple of us had our thumbs bandaged from missing the nail head.
The day came when we thought the boat was finished. It actually looked like a boat when it was done, but we hadn’t a clue about caulking or making it waterproof. Feeling proud of ourselves, we marched down to the carenage with the boat on our shoulders, to christen it. We even gave it a name that escapes me now.
With a mighty heave-ho, we lowered the boat into the water and climbed in. We had forgotten all about making oars, but it would have made no difference. Before you could say “Jimminy Cricket!” the boat, with all six of us in it, did a nose dive to the bottom of the carenage.
Six wet and weary ‘seafarers’ climbed back up to Woolwich Road. We were temporarily deflated, yes, but we’d accomplished something we would remember for the rest of our lives.
A Soucouyant Attacks Dore!
This creature is described in the Trinidad chapter; however I should mention here that it could either be female or male. It becomes a shape shifter through black magic and, at night, sucks the blood of its victims. Sometimes the loss of blood is quite serious. In the shape of a lizard, a mosquito or some other small insect, animal or object, it can enter a victim’s room while the victim is asleep.
I was twelve or thirteen, and on my way home from school at about half past three one afternoon. At the Woolwich Road junction there were four men doing road repairs. I said good afternoon to them, politely. They responded likewise and then went back to their labour – all except one man, who continued to watch me all the way up the road. I couldn’t help but notice that this particular man was tall, with very black skin and that he had bright red eyes that did not blink.
This is not hindsight, but was my honest opinion on that afternoon.
When I arrived home, I heard Dore, our housekeeper and former nanny, crying to Mammy. She was saying that she wanted to go back to St. Kitts right away, because she was afraid that a soucouyant would attack her that very night. Mammy scoffed at such a silly notion, but Dore only cried harder.
She told Mammy that a black man with red eyes kept coming to the kitchen door and asking for water or matches. He had done this several times during the day and always waited outside the kitchen door until she brought the water or matches. On the last occasion however, when she returned with the water, the man was standing inside the doorway. She was convinced that the man was a soucouyant and that it was going to come to suck her blood that night!
Dore said she had heard that once a soucouyant entered your house during the day, it could return during the night like vampires of old, to suck your blood. Mammy laughed and told Dore to lock up tight and not to let the bedbugs bite. I went along to my room to start my homework, also laughing at Dore and the nonsense I’d just overheard. But little did we know…
Next morning, Dore did not come in to prepare our breakfast, and Mammy sent me to Dore’s rooms to see if she’d overslept. I peeped through the curtains and saw her lying on her bed motionless, with a deathly palor. I called her name several times but she didn’t answer. Frightened, I reported to Mammy who then went to Dore’s bedroom. I followed closely behind because Little Miss Curiousity didn’t want to miss a thing!
Dore appeared to have lost quite a bit of blood, but she came to enough to show us her arm. In the bend of her arm, we saw two puncture wounds on which there were spots of dried blood. I saw it ‘with my own two eyes’! Well, she didn’t stay another day in Grenada. Daddy took her to the airport that afternoon, and off she went, back to her home in St. Kitts.
I saw Dore at the St. Kitts airport many years later, when Daddy and I travelled there to attend the mass funeral of the victims of the “Christina” ferry tragedy. Although aged, she remembered the incident with the soucouyant and, after all those years, was still nervous to speak of it. I imagine she has passed away by now.
Jack o’ Lanterns
These were seen as swiftly moving balls of fire in the night sky and thought to be shape shifters going about their dastardly errands. Of course, one could argue the point that the phenomena could very well be just a shooting star or falling comet, but people who want to believe in the supernatural cannot be convinced otherwise.
Wedding Cake in the Tunnel
Another very puzzling incident occurred in the tunnel linking the two sides of St. George’s. Some men, entering the tunnel, saw a man walking ahead of them. Suddenly the man was no longer there, and in his place was what appeared to be a decorated wedding cake ‘walking’ merrily along!
Recognizing it for what it was, probably a soucouyant-in-training, the men rushed forward and the cake suddenly began to run as well. The men caught up with the cake and beat it with their fists and belts, leaving it squashed on the ground. Next day, the news media ran a story about a severely beaten man who had had to be admitted to the hospital. Could he have been a soucouyant?
Jab Jab
The name of this mas is derived from the French patois for ‘Diable Diable’ meaning a pretty devil mas resembling a mediaeval jester’s costume. The costume consists of a Kandal or satin knickers, and satin shirt which are divided into panels of alternating colours with points of cloth at the waist, from which bells hang. On the chest, there is a shaped cloth panel which is decorated with swans down, rhinestones and mirrors. Stockings and alpargatas are worn on the feet, while the headdress consists of a hood with stuffed cloth horns. The Jab Jab carries a thick whip of plaited hemp which he swings and cracks threateningly, similar to the Montserrat masquerade dancers. These whips can reduce the costumes of other Jab Jabs to shreds.
Hurricane Janet
Apart from Hurricane Hugo that destroyed Montserrat in September, 1989, Hurricane Janet in 1955 was the worst storm I have ever experienced. Daddy had already left Grenada for St. Vincent, where he was appointed to the post of Crown Attorney to the St. Vincent government, led by Mr. Ebenezer Joshua. You can imagine our concern when the hurricane notices said that the storm was headed towards St. Vincent and that we in Grenada would just get heavy rain and not much else.
The hurricane shutters went up the day before and next morning, with no storm going to hit us head on, we went to school as usual. As the day grew progressively darker, by 1:30pm the schools on the island closed and children went to their respective homes. My brother David had been born in May of that year and was just a couple of months old at the time.
Who knows what went awry with the local forecasting, but as night fell, Hurricane Janet struck Grenada with all its fury. In a matter of hours, every roof in the neighbourhood was blown off and our neighbours struggled through the wind and rain to seek shelter at our house, one of the oldest and strongest in construction. We huddled together in the drawing room while the wind howled and numerous tree branches hit the house. Rain poured in torrents. Mammy was very calm as she made hot cocoa for everyone and went around checking doors and windows.
I remember, in the wee hours of the morning, we heard the mournful sound of a ship’s horn, then hearing a loud explosion. Later we found out that the entire wharf and all the warehouses had collapsed and fallen into the sea! The carenage was strewn with flotsam of all kinds, from cans destined to grocery stores to bits of furniture, mattresses and shoes, pots and pans, in fact everything that surfaced from the sunken warehouses.
For years I puzzled as to why our house roof remained intact and I finally asked Mammy. It was not by chance or good fortune she said. Through the years she had learned to open one window on the lee side of the storm, and when the eye passes over, during the lull, close that window and open a window on the opposite side of the house. In doing that, the build-up of pressure in the house is released and so the roof stays on. Of course this would not work if a hurricane-spawned tornado struck, but it did not happen to us, thank God!

Throughout time, we can see how we have been slowly conditioned to come to this point where we are on the verge of a cashless society. Did you know that the Bible foretold of this event almost 2,000 years ago?
In Revelation 13:16-18, we read,
“He (the false prophet who decieves many by his miracles) causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.”
Referring to the last generation, this could only be speaking of a cashless society. Why? Revelation 13:17 tells us that we cannot buy or sell unless we receive the mark of the beast. If physical money was still in use, we could buy or sell with one another without receiving the mark. This would contradict scripture that states we need the mark to buy or sell!
These verses could not be referring to something purely spiritual as scripture references two physical locations (our right hand or forehead) stating the mark will be on one “OR” the other. If this mark was purely spiritual, it would indicate only in one place.
This is where it really starts to come together. It is shocking how accurate the Bible is concerning the implatnable RFID microchip. These are notes from a man named Carl Sanders who worked with a team of engineers to help develop this RFID chip
“Carl Sanders sat in seventeen New World Order meetings with heads-of-state officials such as Henry Kissinger and Bob Gates of the C.I.A. to discuss plans on how to bring about this one-world system. The government commissioned Carl Sanders to design a microchip for identifying and controlling the peoples of the world—a microchip that could be inserted under the skin with a hypodermic needle (a quick, convenient method that would be gradually accepted by society).
Carl Sanders, with a team of engineers behind him, with U.S. grant monies supplied by tax dollars, took on this project and designed a microchip that is powered by a lithium battery, rechargeable through the temperature changes in our skin. Without the knowledge of the Bible (Brother Sanders was not a Christian at the time), these engineers spent one-and-a-half-million dollars doing research on the best and most convenient place to have the microchip inserted.
Guess what? These researchers found that the forehead and the back of the hand (the two places the Bible says the mark will go) are not just the most convenient places, but are also the only viable places for rapid, consistent temperature changes in the skin to recharge the lithium battery. The microchip is approximately seven millimeters in length, .75 millimeters in diameter, about the size of a grain of rice. It is capable of storing pages upon pages of information about you. All your general history, work history, crime record, health history, and financial data can be stored on this chip.
Brother Sanders believes that this microchip, which he regretfully helped design, is the “mark” spoken about in Revelation 13:16–18. The original Greek word for “mark” is “charagma,” which means a “scratch or etching.” It is also interesting to note that the number 666 is actually a word in the original Greek. The word is “chi xi stigma,” with the last part, “stigma,” also meaning “to stick or prick.” Carl believes this is referring to a hypodermic needle when they poke into the skin to inject the microchip.”
Mr. Sanders asked a doctor what would happen if the lithium contained within the RFID microchip leaked into the body. The doctor replied by saying a terrible sore would appear in that location. This is what the book of Revelation says:
“And the first (angel) went, and poured out his vial on the earth; and there fell a noisome and grievous sore on the men which had the mark of the beast, and on them which worshipped his image” (Revelation 16:2).

The third angel’s warning in Revelation 14:9-11 states,
“Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, ‘If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.'”
Who is Barack Obama, and why is he still in the public scene?
So what’s in the name? The meaning of someone’s name can say a lot about a person. God throughout history has given names to people that have a specific meaning tied to their lives. How about the name Barack Obama? Let us take a look at what may be hiding beneath the surface.
Jesus says in Luke 10:18, “…I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.”
The Hebrew Strongs word (H1299) for “lightning”: “bârâq” (baw-rawk)
In Isaiah chapter 14, verse 14, we read about Lucifer (Satan) saying in his heart:
“I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.”
In the verses in Isaiah that refer directly to Lucifer, several times it mentions him falling from the heights or the heavens. The Hebrew word for the heights or heavens used here is Hebrew Strongs 1116: “bamah”–Pronounced (bam-maw’)
In Hebrew, the letter “Waw” or “Vav” is often transliterated as a “U” or “O,” and it is primarily used as a conjunction to join concepts together. So to join in Hebrew poetry the concept of lightning (Baraq) and a high place like heaven or the heights of heaven (Bam-Maw), the letter “U” or “O” would be used. So, Baraq “O” Bam-Maw or Baraq “U” Bam-Maw in Hebrew poetry similar to the style written in Isaiah, would translate literally to “Lightning from the heights.” The word “Satan” in Hebrew is a direct translation, therefore “Satan.”
So when Jesus told His disciples in Luke 10:18 that He beheld Satan fall like lightning from heaven, if this were to be spoken by a Jewish Rabbi today influenced by the poetry in the book of Isaiah, he would say these words in Hebrew–the words of Jesus in Luke 10:18 as, And I saw Satan as Baraq O Bam-Maw.
The names of both of Obama’s daughters are Malia and Natasha. If we were to write those names backward (the devil does things in reverse) we would get “ailam ahsatan”. Now if we remove the letters that spell “Alah” (Allah being the false god of Islam), we get “I am Satan”. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
Obama’s campaign logo when he ran in 2008 was a sun over the horizon in the west, with the landscape as the flag of the United States. In Islam, they have their own messiah that they are waiting for called the 12th Imam, or the Mahdi (the Antichrist of the Bible), and one prophecy concerning this man’s appearance is the sun rising in the west.
“Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people— saying with a loud voice, ‘Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment has come; and worship Him who made heaven and earth, the sea and springs of water.'” (Revelation 14:6-7)
Why have the word’s of Jesus in His Gospel accounts regarding His death, burial, and resurrection, been translated into over 3,000 languages, and nothing comes close? The same God who formed the heavens and earth that draws all people to Him through His creation, likewise has sent His Word to the ends of the earth so that we may come to personally know Him to be saved in spirit and in truth through His Son Jesus Christ.
Jesus stands alone among the other religions that say to rightly weigh the scales of good and evil and to make sure you have done more good than bad in this life. Is this how we conduct ourselves justly in a court of law? Bearing the image of God, is this how we project this image into reality?
Our good works cannot save us. If we step before a judge, being guilty of a crime, the judge will not judge us by the good that we have done, but rather by the crimes we have committed. If we as fallen humanity, created in God’s image, pose this type of justice, how much more a perfect, righteous, and Holy God?
God has brought down His moral laws through the 10 commandments given to Moses at Mt. Siani. These laws were not given so we may be justified, but rather that we may see the need for a savior. They are the mirror of God’s character of what He has put in each and every one of us, with our conscious bearing witness that we know that it is wrong to steal, lie, dishonor our parents, murder, and so forth.
We can try and follow the moral laws of the 10 commandments, but we will never catch up to them to be justified before a Holy God. That same word of the law given to Moses became flesh about 2,000 years ago in the body of Jesus Christ. He came to be our justification by fulfilling the law, living a sinless perfect life that only God could fulfill.
The gap between us and the law can never be reconciled by our own merit, but the arm of Jesus is stretched out by the grace and mercy of God. And if we are to grab on, through faith in Him, He will pull us up being the one to justify us. As in the court of law, if someone steps in and pays our fine, even though we are guilty, the judge can do what is legal and just and let us go free. That is what Jesus did almost 2,000 years ago on the cross. It was a legal transaction being fulfilled in the spiritual realm by the shedding of His blood.
For God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ezekiel 18:23). This is why in Isaiah chapter 53, where it speaks of the coming Messiah and His soul being a sacrifice for our sins, why it says it pleased God to crush His only begotten Son.
This is because the wrath that we deserve was justified by being poured out upon His Son. If that wrath was poured out on us, we would all perish to hell forever. God created a way of escape by pouring it out on His Son whose soul could not be left in Hades but was raised and seated at the right hand of God in power.
So now when we put on the Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 13:14), God no longer sees the person who deserves His wrath, but rather the glorious image of His perfect Son dwelling in us, justifying us as if we received the wrath we deserve, making a way of escape from the curse of death–now being conformed into the image of the heavenly man in a new nature, and no longer in the image of the fallen man Adam.
Now what we must do is repent and put our trust and faith in the savior, confessing and forsaking our sins, and to receive His Holy Spirit that we may be born again (for Jesus says we must be born again to enter the Kingdom of God–John chapter 3). This is not just head knowledge of believing in Jesus, but rather receiving His words, taking them to heart, so that we may truly be transformed into the image of God. Where we no longer live to practice sin, but rather turn from our sins and practice righteousness through faith in Him in obedience to His Word by reading the Bible.
Our works cannot save us, but they can condemn us; it is not that we earn our way into everlasting life, but that we obey our Lord Jesus Christ:
“And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him.” (Hebrews 5:9)
“Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, ‘Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.’
Then He who sat on the throne said, ‘Behold, I make all things new.’ And He said to me, ‘Write, for these words are true and faithful.’
And He said to me, ‘It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.'” (Revelation 21:1-8).

Another thing I’ve really noticed is that often for many people, less-than-perfect credit is the result of circumstances further than their control. As an example they may happen to be saddled with an illness so they have substantial bills going to collections. It can be due to a job loss or the inability to work. Hi there, my information is entirely from actual experiences. Because of my father’s position in the legal dept, we lived in seven Caribbean islands, Grenada being the scariest. Apart from my experiences, other events I write about in my bio-anthology are not found in any book, but are gleaned from the old folks, sitting around a mango tree at dusk. Someone starts off by saying, “Old people say” or “School children say”, and the story begins. However, in Montserrat, when I asked an old lady about the custom of setting up a ‘jumbie table’ on Christmas Eve, the old lady ran off. She was so fast that she could have won a gold medal in the summer Olympics! Funny thing is, I am now old myself!

I’m afraid I do know what I’m talking about, having personally experienced these events. I’ve tried not to make the stories too gory. My father was a magistrate in Grenada when the bodies of infants were found with missing hearts. Here in Montserrat, we are at the mercy of a house ghost. Can you imagine going to bed at night, you take off the lamp and actually feel somebody (or something) climb onto bed beside you? You turn on the lamp and there is nothing there.
