Dancing with the Dead No.10: Montserrat
The Unwelcome Visitor
In May of 1970, my father was appointed as Attorney General to the island of Montserrat, about thirty miles away from Antigua. The Government, led by the venerable Mr. William H. Bramble, placed us in a large house called “The Gearbox”. It was so named because Major Gear, an Englishman who had been the Director of Public Works, had built it. Both he and his wife had passed away some years before we moved into the house.
Downhill of The Gearbox, in a neat row, were four identical two-bedroom bungalows called “The Four Gears” – “First Gear”, “Second Gear”, “Third Gear” and, at the top, “Fourth Gear”. Professionals from other countries, who were in Montserrat on contract with the Government, tenanted these houses. For the most part they all had their families with them.
For example, in “First Gear” there was an American Peace Corps teacher attached to the Montserrat Secondary School. In “Second Gear” there was a Trinidadian (Mr. Robinson) with his family who worked with the Customs Department as a consultant. In “Third Gear” there was another Trinidadian (Mr. Ragoonanan) with his family who worked with the Family Planning Association. Finally, in “Fourth Gear”, there was a Canadian dentist on a month’s holiday cum work detail, with the hospital’s dental clinic. At the start of every month, a new dentist and his family would arrive from Canada, replacing the previous one. As you can see, the neighbourhood was a lively one.
The Gearbox itself was a large split-level, four-bedroom house, built of concrete on sloping land on the old Amersham Estate. There were about a dozen steps from the lawn leading up to the front porch and main entrance. The master bedroom with its ensuite bathroom was on the upper level on one side of the house. On the opposite end of the house, on the lower level, were three smaller bedrooms with one bathroom between them. The dining room and drawing room were in the center and over all there was a tall cathedral ceiling.
Being partygoers themselves, my parents had many friends and they also loved to entertain. They often held official cocktail parties or more intimate dinner parties at the house. Many of their friends popped in to visit at any given time and the front door was always open.
One day, when my son Richard was five and my daughter Michelle was four, a lady in a yellow raincoat came up the front steps of The Gearbox and knocked on the door. This must have happened during the summer holidays when the children were at home, and everyone else was at work except my mother, who was in her bedroom. Had it been a school day, Richard and Michelle would have been at Rita Frederick’s (“Auntie Rita’s”) kindergarten at The Groves, the agricultural station where she and her husband lived and where “Uncle Rex” was Director of Agriculture.
On hearing the knock, Michelle, who was inside the house, went to the front door to see who was there. The lady in the yellow raincoat asked her if her mother was in. No, Michelle said, but her granny was upstairs in the bedroom. Thereupon, Michelle invited the lady in to have a seat in the drawing room, saying that she would go and fetch her granny. The lady entered and duly sat down on one of our ancient, maroon-coloured ‘Morris chairs’; while Michelle ran up the five steps to my mother’s room and told her that there was a lady in the drawing room.
In less than a minute, my mother, followed by Michelle, went down to see who the lady could be and what she wanted, but there was no one in the drawing room, or even on the front porch! They went out on the porch and looked down the driveway to where Richard was playing with the children from the various ‘Gear Boxes”. When questioned, the children said they had seen no one at all, neither coming to the house nor leaving. Strange!
On another occasion, Richard, Michelle, and my younger sisters, Linda and Diane, who were born in St. Vincent, were gathered in our bedroom. I was at work at the Liat office in lower George Street, where I was the reservations supervisor. In the midst of noisy chatter, Michelle glanced at the bedroom window and saw, clutching the windowsill, a pair of white hands with bright red polish on the fingernails.
Later, when I got home from work, she told me about it. Puzzled, I went outside and around to the side of the house where the bedroom window was. As I thought, the windowsill was a good eight feet above the ground. There was nothing in the vicinity that anyone could have climbed up on to reach the window. The owner of the disembodied hands would have had to be a giant!
Many years later, I learned that when the Gears lived at The Gearbox, Mrs. Gear always wore a yellow plastic raincoat whenever she went out in inclement weather. It was also a known fact that she always painted her fingernails with bright red nail polish. It was therefore easy to conclude that it could only have been the deceased Mrs. Gear who was the ghostly visitor!
The Voodoo Doll
I am certain that most readers have heard of the ‘voodoo doll’ and the curses resulting from burning the doll, or sticking a pin or knife into it, thus inflicting harm to an unsuspecting victim. Envy, revenge or suspected theft was sometimes all that was needed to invoke the wrath of the doll. The victim is made to suffer excruciating pain each time the sharp object is jabbed into the doll, or even to suffer a heart attack. Be warned however – to the uninitiated user, quite often the spells backfire!
One Saturday, I took the children for a drive through the ‘central corridor’ to the airport in “Flower Power”. This was my old Morris Minor on which I had covered every rust spot with a bright, neon psychedelic flower. A witty friend had given me an enormous windup key that, by means of suction, was attached to the boot or trunk of the car. Suddenly everyone wanted to buy this ‘windup toy car’ from me! But I digress.
On our way back home, while passing through the area called Gages on the outskirts of Plymouth, we came upon an old lady sitting at the side of the road. She had a scarred wooden tray on which she displayed some homemade dolls made with black cloth. The dolls had tiny sewn-on beads for the eyes and nose and a red embroidered slash for the mouth.
To this day I cannot explain why I stopped and bought one of the dolls. I had heard the rumours that certain residents in Gages practiced voodoo, or obeah, but I had always discounted them as being nonsense. Not on Montserrat, I would always say. We went on home and I put the doll away in the clothes closet in our bedroom.
Richard, my son, came across the doll one day and thought he would have some fun with it. He stuck a pin into the doll’s chest and said, “This is Michelle!” You see, Michelle, my daughter, frequently attacked Richard, jabbing him with her elbow or pinching him and when Richard retaliated, he always got caught and was punished. I suppose it was understandable that he would try to get back at her via the voodoo doll.
When he stuck the pin in the doll, nothing happened at first. He did it a second time and still nothing happened. Frustrated, Richard threw the doll on the floor and started to flounce out of the room. I said started to, because by some quirk, he marched right into the side of the doorframe, smashing the tip of his big toe. There was blood all over the floor. While bandaging his wound, I used the inexplicable accident as a means to teach him that revenge is not always sweet. I thought that was the end of the matter – until summer holidays started and it all began again.
With my Liat airline employee pass, my children and I could travel extensively each year during my vacation leave. My brother Basil, a civil engineer residing in Toronto, had invited us to visit with him and his wife during the summer of ’71, and we left Montserrat in July for what was to be a memorable 2-week visit.
We had a wonderful vacation shopping and sightseeing, including a trip to Niagara Falls, an amble through a huge flea market, and a fun day at Centre Island, a theme park with lots of rides and fun things to do. We even took the service elevator up to the topmost floor of the CN Tower, which was under construction by Basil’s company at the time. The revolving restaurant had not yet been built, but Basil showed me where it would be.
On one of the evenings of our visit, Basil took us all out to an excellent restaurant for dinner. We had finished the main course and were starting on dessert, when Richard brought out the voodoo doll from his pocket.
I was amazed that Richard would have done such a thing – to bring the doll all the way from Montserrat without my knowledge. I would not have allowed him to do it, had I known. He said he wanted to show the doll to his Uncle Basil. Not wanting to make a scene at the restaurant, I promised myself I would give him a proper scolding when we got back to the house. To my surprise, Richard had also brought along a pin that he proceeded to stick into the doll, at the same time saying, “This is Michelle!”
For a few heavy moments, nobody spoke and nothing happened; then we shook our heads in amusement and picked up our dessert spoons again. Then it happened. In a split second, Richard and the chair in which he was sitting flew backward and toppled over, knocking him to the ground where he hit his head. He had done nothing to make that happen except to stick the pin in the doll. When he and the chair were righted, I confiscated the doll. On returning to Montserrat, I immediately locked the doll away, figuring it had caused enough harm.
Years later, after I’d left the airlines for a higher position with the Montserrat Tourist Board, a marketing company sent some photographers and writers down to Montserrat to shoot footage on behalf of the Tourist Board. They asked me about the possible existence of voodoo on the island, though I didn’t see what that had to do with tourism, bordering on the negative, as it were. Reluctantly I told them about our experience with the voodoo doll and, on impulse, gave them the doll. I told them to keep it, and that I never wanted to see it again. They were thrilled.
When I last saw that voodoo doll, one of the photographers had swung it by the neck from a banana tree. I walked away. Whether it was a good doll or a bad doll, and whether you believe these things happened or not, it is of no importance. I saw how it affected my son and I wanted no part of it, ever again.
Stop Thief!
This one’s a doozy! I didn’t witness it, so cannot vouch for its veracity, however it fits nicely into this anthology. Schoolchildren say – and that is how we start to relate an item of gossip on Montserrat – that this story all started at Blackburne Airport one afternoon, shortly prior to the departure of the flight to Antigua.
One of the passengers, a gentleman, had gone into the bathroom and inadvertently had left his wallet on the bathroom sink. While waiting in the departure lounge, he suddenly missed his wallet and rushed back to the bathroom, but unfortunately the wallet was gone. In his mind, the only person who had entered the bathroom when he was exiting it was the cleaning lady.
First he asked everyone if they had seen the wallet, then he approached the cleaner, accusing her and demanding that she return it to him. She loudly defended herself, denying that she had taken the wallet. On and on she ranted and raved.
Just then, the flight was called and the gentleman had no choice but to return to the departure lounge. Before he boarded the plane, however, he shouted out in a very loud voice that whoever had taken his wallet would NEVER live to see another day! Yes, here it comes. You knew there would be more to this story, didn’t you?
Later that afternoon when the cleaner had finished her work at the airport, she found someone who agreed to give her a ride home in his car. When the vehicle passed through Gages and turned right onto Lovers’ Lane, the cleaner suddenly gave a piercing scream. She was burning up!
Startled, the driver looked over at the cleaner who was sitting next to him in the front passenger seat of the vehicle. It appeared as though she was on fire! But how could that be? The driver immediately stopped the car and tried to put out the fire, but she was burning from the inside, not on the outside! There was nothing he could do. Amazingly the cleaning lady burned to death without the least bit of damage to the seat upon which she had been sitting or to the vehicle!
People could not help but remember the gentleman’s threat, however there was no physical evidence with which to link him to the woman’s death. In the Caribbean, very little was known about internal combustion at that time, therefore the conclusion was that the gentleman had used voodoo to affect his curse on the cleaning lady!
Dancing with the Dead
This one’s weird. Really weird. And it was to be our last paranormal experience at The Gearbox, because immediately after it happened, the children and I moved out and took a rented house in Upper Dagenham, a suburb of Plymouth, just above the Glendon Hospital.
On a few occasions, I had found Michelle sleepwalking. At those times, I would gently turn her around and lead her back to bed without waking her. I imagine that the events of this story happened during one of these sleepwalking episodes. Then again, she might have been fully awake.
On the night when this event took place, I had slept through it, so cannot vouch for its authenticity. However there had been so many occurrences in The Gearbox before that, who was I to doubt that it really happened!
Michelle told me that sometime during the night, she had woken up to go to the bathroom. On her way there, she heard music coming from the drawing room, as well as people talking and laughing. She peaked around the door connecting the passageway to the drawing room and, to her surprise, saw a room full of people obviously having a party. A funny feeling came over her because, even though she knew that her grandparents often held parties there, it seemed an odd hour for a party to be taking place.
She was just about to continue on to the bathroom, when a tall cadaverous gentleman approached her with his hands held out towards her. In a trance, she stepped into the drawing room and her small hands were lost in his large hands. As she had often done with her grandfather, and as so many children do when dancing with an adult, she put her bare feet on the top of gentleman’s shoes. He spun her around into a whirl of dancing, drawing her further and further into the crowd of partygoers. The music played on.
Suddenly Michelle grew terribly cold, but it was not from the night air as all the windows and doors were shut. Her hands felt as though they were encased in ice. She looked up at the gentleman’s face, meaning to politely excuse herself from his embrace, and saw, not a flesh and blood man, but an apparition. Totally frightened at this point, she tugged her little hands out of his and fled back to the bedroom, her urge to go to the bathroom completely forgotten!
Next day, my parents assured us that they had not had a party that night. Of course not! I would have known and would normally have been involved in the preparations for a party. So, what did happen? What did Michelle see? Had she been sleepwalking again?
In casually enquiring of the older neighbours, I learned that Major and Mrs. Gear frequently held parties at The Gearbox. Apparently, although they had passed on a long time before, their restless spirits kept returning to the house they had built. As a part of the haunting, it should have been no surprise that the long-dead host and hostess would continue to invite their ghostly friends to a party!
After our family vacated The Gearbox, the Government of Montserrat continued to use the building up 1995, when Plymouth and all areas south, including Amersham, were abandoned due to the volcanic eruption that started in July of that year.
From time to time I think about the house, especially when looking through old photographs. When that happens, I often wonder if the ghostly Mrs. Gear is still paying visits to her home, and if the Gears’ spectral guests still gather in the large ash-filled drawing room to dance. Whatever, I am NOT about to find out!
Toni’s Ouija Board
In 1973, we moved out of the very-haunted “Gearbox” in Amersham to one of Brother Wade’s rental apartments, just above the Glendon Hospital in Dagenham, a suburb of Plymouth, Montserrat. I must say, that after three tumultuous years at the “Gearbox”, it was satisfying to be able to live without that kind of excitement.
Nothing extraordinary happened at the Wade apartment, except that my daughter Michelle and Toni Frederick, a close friend who lived in another of the apartments, found and experimented with an old Ouija board. Sigh! It is not a game! There are so many warnings out there about Ouija boards, the most serious being that indiscriminate use can result in the conjuring up of mostly mischievous or violent spirits. Apparently this did happen to the girls and wisely, after receiving a good fright, they stopped using the board. Michelle has not spoken much about what did happen, but I gather it must have been very frightening.
Ellen’s Warning
Ellen, a large middle-aged Montserratian, had been our housekeeper for years. As I learned, she was very superstitious. She came with us when we moved to a larger 3-bedroom house on the street above the Wade apartments.
Life there was uneventful except for one thing – I kept losing underwear! Every time I did the laundry and hung the clothes on the clothesline at the back of the house, my underwear would disappear. I never ever found the culprit and could only wonder as to the person’s motive for taking these garments.
Well, I didn’t have to wonder for too long. One day Ellen came to work and found me quite agitated, having once again lost another pair of lacy panties that I’d especially loved. I told her about it and she immediately had the answer.
Ellen told me that if someone wanted to do me harm for whatever reason (envy or some perceived grievance), that person would take one of my personal items, something I wore close to my body, and bury that item in the cemetery. That action would supposedly cause illness or misfortune. She advised me never to hang my underwear outside of the house again, and I never have, to this day.

These days of austerity and relative stress about getting debt, a lot of people balk contrary to the idea of using a credit card to make acquisition of merchandise or pay for a trip, preferring, instead just to rely on a tried plus trusted means of making transaction – cash. However, if you possess the cash there to make the purchase entirely, then, paradoxically, that is the best time to use the cards for several reasons.
Nothing wrong in using a card however make sure you do NOT overspend on trivialities and pay off the debt ASAP.

My father’s saying that ‘curiousity kills the cat’ only made me more curious. Attending a Catholic convent made me question my faith which got me into trouble, but I questioned anyway!
