CHARMS & TALISMEN TO WARD OFF EVIL
Garlic
Fans of Vampire movies and literature will be quite familiar with the power of garlic. In order to discourage a Vampire or other Shape Shifter from attacking you at night, hang bunches of garlic at every entrance to the house. For some reason, these blood suckers are repelled by the garlic and will turn away.
Rice, Salt and Sand
According to my Grenadian friend, Wendy-Pat, if you suspect that a Loupgarou is planning to visit you at night, put a line of rice, salt or sand on the ground at your entrance and on your window sills. When the entity comes under cover of darkness, it has to count every grain of the rice, salt or sand before it can enter the building. Sun-up will find it there, still counting, at which time you can destroy it by throwing salt on it. This reminds me of the time when we had an invasion of tree frogs in our apartment. Throwing salt on them made the tiny creatures shrivel up to nothing and die. I imagine the salt would negatively affect the shape shifter, don’t you?
There is another way to ‘do away with’ a La Diablesse or Loupgarou that I have serious doubts about and do not recommend, unless you don’t mind being arrested for murder. Without speaking, you show the entity the butt of your gun three times and then fire. The creature will die and return to its human form. Oh yeah?
The Colour Red
It is also thought that creatures of the night and persons who are intent on doing you harm are put off by anything red on your person. Underwear, nightclothes, a hair ornament, jewelry, or a handkerchief in red would more than suffice as a shield.
A Centuries-old Spell
When I was a teenager, Mammy told me a simple spell to fight off persons who wanted to do you harm, or were ‘back-stabbing’ you, or deliberately thwarting your efforts to succeed in life. She said to take a small bit of paper and, using a black or blue-ink pen, write the first and last name of your antagonist, then put the paper in your shoe. In effect, you are ‘walking’ on the person. This act won’t harm the person, but in a very short time, the person’s whole attitude towards you will change and he or she will trouble you no more. They will, in fact, become compliant and almost subservient.
You can imagine my shock, then, when I glanced at page 35 of the book “Shoes”, sub-title “A Celebration of Pumps, Sandals, Slippers & More”, by Linda O’Keeffe (ISBN #0-7611-0114-4), and saw a photograph of a brown leather sandal with a face carved on the sole. The description below the photograph reads, and I quote, “Egyptians and Romans drew the faces of their enemies on the soles of their sandals so they could literally step on them.”
Think back to all the movies you’ve seen on the life and crucifixion of Jesus, and the sturdy leather sandals worn by the Roman soldiers. Who knows what they had carved in the soles of their shoes!
The Holy Cross and Holy Water
In most vampire movies and books, it goes without question that a cross is a strong deterrent against evil. The entity cannot attack you personally if you wear a small gold or silver cross on a chain hanging around your neck. In the famous Bram Stoker book and movie, “Dracula”, the demon’s protagonist, Van Helsing, uses a cross to protect himself and to vanquish Dracula.
Likewise, holy water (water that has been blessed by a priest) is a strong shield against evil. Sprinkled or thrown at the entity, the holy water causes severe burns and possibly its demise.
Plants and Green Bottles
A well-known plant used in the practice of voodoo on the island of Nevis is the Dieffenbachia sp., whose sap causes temporary paralysis of the larynx. Literally one’s vocal cords are shut down for a period of time. Some farmers use the sap to ward off theft by rubbing it on their fruits and vegetables – an exhausting task. Rewards are great however when a ‘cursed’ villager, the thief, is found to be speechless.
On Nevis, farmers are also known to fill green bottles with various seeds, and hang the bottles around their property as a sign that their land is under supernatural protection. This is also done in Trinidad & Tobago, however the farmers there use blue bottles!
Don’t Speak First!
This advice was given to me by one of our maids in St. Vincent. She said to me that if I met anyone walking on the road at night, I should not speak to them first. Politeness dictates that upon meeting anyone during the day or night, you greet that person with a “Good day!” or “Good evening!” The person would naturally respond in kind.
If however that person is not human, that is, he or she is a witch or other demon, the person will not respond but can and will change its shape and cause you harm. One example of this is in the story, “The Devil Dog”, in the Grenada chapter.
Our maid went on to point out how one can spot an inhuman figure. The entity, although looking like an old man or old woman, will either be floating a few inches off the ground – yes, I did say floating – or it may have goat’s feet instead of human feet, or, if it had human feet, the feet may be turned backwards!
Understandably, for a long time, I had many nights of tossing and turning, while goat-footed demons appeared in every dream!
CONCLUSION:
Please accept my apology if this book adversely affects your dreams at night. That was not my purpose in writing it, but rather to make you aware that there is a darker side to the sun, sand and sea touted by travel agents and tour operators as all the Caribbean is about.
To be perfectly honest, our brighter side is what wins out in the end. There is no better place on planet earth to be than in the Caribbean – perpetual near- perfect weather; beautiful beaches; eye-popping underwater scenery with its colourful fish and corals; volcano viewing; exciting hiking trails; exotic carnivals; clear night skies brimming with stars and easily recognizable constellations; friendly people and a laid-back lifestyle.
Once here, relaxing in a lightly swaying hammock, lying on a gently bobbing pool float, or relaxing on a patio at sunset with a chilled ‘sundowner’ in hand, it is quite easy to forget the ills of the world.
