Dancing with the Dead No. 12 – New York, A Caribbean Perspective
The big plane slowed for landing at Idlewild Airport, now JFK Airport, in New York. My goodness, what a sight met my eyes. Below there were so many lights and tall buildings. I’d never left the Caribbean before so this was entirely amazing for a rube like me travelling alone.
I was so nervous approaching immigration, but I said “Good evening” nicely. The official noted that I had an ‘accent’ and asked where I was from. When I replied that I was travelling from St Vincent in the Caribbean, he said “Well, welcome to New York!” You never have a second chance to make a good first impression, and this was a very good first impression.
There, in the upper gallery, was Aunt Elaine waving and smiling. She’d come to meet me!
Aunt Elaine & Grandma Rose
Aunt Elaine Dias-Perry was Daddy’s younger sister who was at the time a nurse in a doctor’s office in the Bronx. She looked very much like Daddy with their Portuguese ancestry and she also had dark curly hair like his. She lived with her mum, my grandmother, on the third floor of an old brownstone in Union Avenue, the Bronx.
Grandma Beatrice Rose, once a worker on Grandfather Dias’s sugar estate in St Kitts, was a large lady with a round face who was very Americanised. She was on a food programme, similar to the Food Stamps programme in use today, and she had to go to an outlet at the beginning of every week to pick up a bag full of basic groceries.
By the end of that week, and before going to collect the new supplies, Grandma Rose threw into the trash everything that she hadn’t used, including unopened bags of sugar, flour and rice! This to me was pure wastage, especially as there were so many starving people in the world. I talked with her about it, but she felt ‘entitled’ to it and said that she’d ‘earned it’. There are some people you cannot argue with.
During the first two weeks of my stay, Aunt Elaine took time off from work to show me around New York. She took me on a boat ride around Manhattan, to the Bronx Zoo and to Central Park. On another occasion she took me to Coney Island. I was having lots of fun!
The Subway System
In no time at all, I learned the subway system and travelled alone on it. At first the names of the stations and the difference between a ‘local’ and an ‘express’ puzzled me, as well as which platform to stand on to go where. But, hey, I got the hang of it and, when a gentleman asked me which train he should take to get where he wanted to go, I was able to direct him to the correct platform and which train to look for. Now I felt as though I belonged!
The strangest thing would happen though. Each evening when I was headed home at the end of my secretarial class and entered a subway carriage, none of the passengers said a word. I must have been awfully naïve, but I called out “Good evening, everyone!” Everybody looked at me as though I’d lost my mind, then one by one a mumbled “Good evening!” came back to me. I bet they told their families when they got home about the nutcase in the subway car.
And then one afternoon as I got down to street level, a drop of liquid splashed on me. I jerked backward and looked up. Way above me a white young man had his ‘thingee’ hanging over the rail peeing onto the street and the people below. I told Aunt Elaine about it when I got home. She said he was a doper, probably on LSD or whatever was the popular drug in the sixties.
At The Y.M.C.A!
Aunt Elaine signed me up at the nearby YMCA at which she was a member. “YMCA!” I exclaimed, “Why not YWCA?” Apparently the women’s association building was too far away and, besides the men’s association welcomed both sexes.
Since I’d started learning ballet as a child in St Kitts and continued classes in Grenada, I joined the intermediate ballet class at the “Y” for the exercise. I also joined the square dance class. In addition I used to go look at the synchronised swimming classes and fencing classes, both of which interested me. “En garde!” became my new saying.
I made many friends there. I would recommend that everyone join a YMCA or similar association, especially those persons who stay at home and who take numerous medications to combat depression. Get out! Go meet people! Do fun things! Like the many church picnics that Grandma Rose took me on and introduced me to all her friends. The bus ride, the scenery, the picnic tables, the food and drink, the children playing and running and laughing! Everyone having fun and, especially, being close to nature.
A Modeling Gig
It was at one of Grandma Rose’s church picnics that I was asked to model at a fund-raiser fashion show. I’d never modeled before and hadn’t a clue what was expected of me. Believe me, you learn quick. When we got back home I looked through my limited clothing and decided that everything looked worn and old. That’s it; I would make something to wear!
Grandma had an old Singer sewing machine – a portable model with a hand wheel to turn. I tried it out and it worked. Then went to the corner shop, looked through their McCall patterns and choose one for a casual top. And then I chose some material and thread. I may not have mentioned it before but, when I was a schoolgirl in St Vincent, I used to make my own school and games uniforms. Sewing interested me. At the time.
For the fashion show I cut and sewed for hours, ending up with a Mondrian-style top in light and dark blue, to match my dark blue ‘peddle pushers’ which, today are called ‘capris’. Worn with black ballerina flats, I was a hit. I think. Anyway the audience was very appreciative and I thought they would never stop clapping. You see, I watched the girls who strutted on the runway ahead of me (they were all professional models). Watched their every move in fact, so when I was announced, I strutted my stuff too, just like they did!
Getting Lost in Macy’s
I wasn’t exactly lost. Whoever said I was? Not true!
Well, one Saturday when Aunt Elaine was off work, she asked if I would like to go to Macy’s with her. Now I’d heard of Macy’s department store, also Woolworth’s, Sears, etc, but had never seen any of them except for catalogues. Right after breakfast, we set out on the subway to 14th Street in Manhattan. I was in new territory.
Oh, did I mention that it was now well into Fall? Everyone, including Aunt Elaine and me, was dressed in warm clothing – jeans, sweaters, thick scarves, short coats or wind-breakers, warm sox and short boots. Some wore knitted caps, covering their ears.
Macy’s towered above the street and I stood there with open mouth, agape at the wonderful window displays. My goodness, it was the largest store I’d ever seen in my life! We strolled through many departments, window shopping and stopped at the underwear section where my aunt stopped to make a purchase. Bored at looking at hundreds of bras and panties, I wondered off. A tingle of excitement took hold of me when I saw the sign for the shoe department and I immediately headed there, not at all thinking I should have told my aunt where I would be.
Once there, I was in shoe heaven. Thousands of stylish shoes – whole sections in size 8, my size. Clerks hovered around me, kneeling and presenting me with open boxes of shoes to try on. Hours passed. The clerks moved on to other more promising customers and I helped myself. Meanwhile Aunt Elaine, along with store security, was searching for me. Sigh. She should have thought to check the shoe department. She should have. Couldn’t she see I wasn’t really lost?
I visited the Macy’s shoe department many times after that, on my own. The clerks all remembered me and would leave me alone to try on hundreds of size 8 shoes. I couldn’t have spent more happy hours anywhere. The thought crossed my mind as to what it would be like to marry a man who owned a shoe store, but that was not to be. Today, I own 150 pairs of shoes and still go ‘gaga’ when I go to shoe stores overseas. Not surprisingly, now I’m retired I wear the same pair of black flip-flops every day!
My First Snowfall
The temperature dropped to below freezing and I constantly looked at the sky, waiting anxiously to see my first snowfall. Finally, snow! I yelled with joy and ran down the stairs and out into the street, sticking my tongue out to catch the snowflakes. Oh what joy! I saw kids making snowballs and throwing them at each other, so I made one too and tried to throw it three stories up to hit Grandma Rose. She was looking out the window laughing at me. Of course a snowball couldn’t reach so high!
There was much snow in the days following, along with slush and icy patches causing pedestrians to fall. Not funny. One good thing – the snow covered the garbage in the street and in the alleys, making it all look like Christmas presents.
Drugs
I must say, looking out the window at the street was very exciting in that neighbourhood. There was always something happening, usually of a criminal nature. The sound of police and ambulance sirens was a common occurrence in the Bronx.
Every day I watched a young girl walk up Union Avenue pushing a baby carriage. She couldn’t have been more than fifteen. Many young persons would approach her, talk for a bit and then reach down to pat the baby. I thought that was very nice of them.
Then one day I looked closer and saw that their hands not only patted the baby, but reached further under the baby’s blanket and came out holding in their hand a small packet of ‘something’. I could only suspect what it was the young woman was selling, hidden under her baby’s blanket.
On another day there was a gang of youths down in the street below who were idling. Suddenly, I suppose out of boredom or under the influence of drugs, they approached a car that was parked nearby and set it on fire. Police and a fire tender arrived on the scene. Grandma Rose pulled me inside and closed the window. She said to me “You didn’t see anything.”
On yet another day I heard the sound of squealing. In the apartment next to ours the family dog had had puppies. The sons were hooting with laughter as they took up each puppy and threw it three stories down. They were trying to throw each tiny puppy onto the rusted iron spikes of the fence. Some died as they slammed to the ground, while some of the puppies were impaled on the spikes. Again Grandma Rose shut the window and said “You didn’t see anything, you hear me? They take drugs!”
Ed Sullivan & the Beatles
What a lot of publicity there was when the Beatles, fresh from London, landed at Idlewild Airport. Thousands of young girls screamed hysterically, crying and thrusting their hands through the barricades to reach their idols. All in vain, as the four lads with identical blunt haircuts were whisked away in large black limousines to their hotel. I shook my head at the fickle young women and wondered how soon it would be before these same girls swooned over the next pop idol.
I’d heard the Beatles would appear on the Ed Sullivan show so I tuned in to the show every day. At last, the build up to the climax. Ed Sullivan, as suave as ever, trying to cover his own excitement. What a windfall for him and the television network. This was the very first appearance of the famous band in America.
With a loud drum roll and a rising voice, Ed Sullivan announced the Beatles and Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon and Ringo Starr ran onto the stage. The live audience rose to their feet, shouting and clapping. The noise was such that Grandma Rose came out of her bedroom to see what was the matter. Her eyes widened as she stood there watching. All of a sudden she roared with laughter, said a curse word and returned to her room. This was the picture that stuck with me forever after – Grandma Rose laughing and shouting “Sheeet!” at the Beatles.
President Kennedy
I joined with all of America in total admiration for this handsome president with his beautiful wife and two beautiful children. The TV channels were nuts over this wealthy and powerful family. It was even said that if Jacqueline Kennedy did nothing on any given day, there would be no newscasts!
And then the trip to Dallas Texas happened. Aunt Elaine was at work, but Grandma Rose and I sat on the sofa and watched the beloved president, his wife and Governor Wallace drive slowly through the streets of downtown Dallas. We heard the screams. We saw the president slump forward. We saw Mrs. Kennedy cradling her bloodied husband, completely oblivious to her own safety. We saw the Secret Service scrambling. We saw everything and we were stunned.
In the days following, we saw the arrest and arraignment of Lee Harvey Oswald. We saw him being taken out of the courthouse. We saw Jack Ruby approach and gun him down. We saw police scrambling. We saw everything and we shed many tears. For the Kennedys and for America.
On thinking back decades later, I conclude that Oswald was a ‘patsy’ used by others to get rid of Mr. Kennedy. The motive? I have opinions on that too!
Goodbye New York!
In the two plus years I lived in New York, my boyfriend and I had kept in touch via the post and many long-distance calls. Some of the letters we exchanged exceeded thirty pages and had to be mailed in two separate envelopes. The postman would signal me from way up the street that he had mail for me and I would race downstairs, bounding over three steps at a time.
My fiancé, as we referred to each other, had found a lucrative job in Barbados at a radio station and he would send for me to join him. My parents thought that they had succeeded in parting us, but they were wrong. We felt very much like Romeo and Juliet as we made our plans to secretly meet and get married.
I suppose my parents were very disappointed in me. Daddy had planned for me to take voice training in New York, but it turned out to be much too expensive, so I ended up training myself. Daddy’s disappointment manifested itself by his never ever attending any of my concerts after my singing success. Ever!
So it was that, in November of 1964, an airline ticket arrived for me to travel, one-way, to Barbados. I realize I could have made much of myself in New York, but love was calling and I heard its call. I eloped.
In all the years following, I’ve often wondered what would have become of me had I stayed, melting into the rat race of New York City, perhaps dodging bullets, evading muggings, surrendering to peer pressure to try just a little of this or of that, retrieved from under the blanket of a little baby in a carriage down on the street. But fate played its part and so I bade farewell to Aunt Elaine and Grandma Rose and headed for the airport. I never saw either of them again.

My family and I have personally experienced many of the events in my bio/anthology. And yet, with the world going to hell in a handbasket, I would not live anywhere else than right here!

Traveling to NYC was a way of getting me away from the young man I loved. I eloped back to the islands. Let’s just say my parents knew best. Sigh. My bio-anthology covers my life from birth up to and including my escape from the erupting volcano in Montserrat, where I currently live. Shirley

obviously like your web site but you have to test the spelling on quite a few of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling issues and I to find it very troublesome to inform the truth on the other hand I’ll definitely come back again.

Today, I went to the beach with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is completely off topic but I had to tell someone!
That was a funny story, not so much for your daughter though. There is too much to love about the sea, beach, sand and marine creatures for her to leave it off her little bucket list. Use the experience as a lesson she can learn. In effect, your daughter was like an uninvited guest in the crab’s house. What would she do if the situation were to be reversed and the crab came into her house? Shirley
