Dancing with the Dead — Barbados
Arrival at Seawell Airport (now Grantley Adams Intl Airport)
It was with much apprehension that I stepped off the plane at the Barbados airport (today called the Grantley Adams International Airport), not only because I’d made a major decision on the course my life would take, but also how it would affect my relationship with my family in the future.
By this time, my parents, along with my younger siblings David, Linda and Diane, had left St Vincent for St Kitts, where Daddy was appointed Attorney General in the Robert Bradshaw government. They occupied a large, two-story house in Fortlands called “Shirley House”. What do you know – that was my name!
My siblings were enrolled at the Catholic Convent in Basseterre, my old school, wearing the same uniform that I wore in the 1940’s. Life had gone full circle for my family.
My fiancé settled me in at Mrs Cozier’s boardinghouse. There I met the landlady’s daughter, Rose, and two other female boarders – a Guyanese and a Grenadian – both working on the island. I got on with them really well and soon found a job working in a bank as a cashier.
Man, do I ever hate bank work. For one, the women’s salaries were far lower than the men’s salaries, and this rankled when part of my duty was to train new male employees.
One day I was one cent short in balancing and I had to stay for hours looking for that one cent. I never did find the missing cent, nor could I take a stupid cent out of my purse and add it to the till in order to balance. No, the error had to be found. Today, banks have discovered that time is money (who knew!) and they have more adept ways of reconciling cash variances.
Pan American Airways
The next day during my lunch hour, still peeved, I walked across the street to the Pan American Airways reservations office, walked up the stairs, passed by the secretary with a terse “Good afternoon”, knocked three times on the manager’s door, opened it and walked straight up to his desk.
Without so much as an introduction, I said to the manager “Good afternoon, sir. I would like to work with your airline!” Wow! There was a shocked silence for a moment while I wished the floor would open up and swallow me. He stared at me as if I’d just escaped from the lunatic asylum. Then he said “You’re hired!” And that was the start of my career in the airlines.
Happy, happy, happy was I. I was given a neat blue uniform with a white blouse, a PanAm air hostess hat, stockings and a pair of navy pumps. Did I look spiffy or what! I was posted at the airport at the check-in counter along with Diane N. a very elegant coworker. We worked every flight by ourselves without modern technology, checked in passengers, weighed luggage, wrote out boarding passes, made up passenger manifests and went on board the aircraft for a final passenger count.
One day we checked in 89 passengers, however on board there were 90 passengers. Both Diane and I used our counters and still came up with 90 passengers. What a hue and cry there was when the nearby Air Canada plane found they were one passenger short. Then there arose the problem of finding out which passenger was supposed to be on the other plane.
All the passengers had to produce their boarding passes and we soon discovered the errant passenger. She swore this was the plane that was going to take her to Toronto. No, we said, we’re going to New York. That is your plane over there! “No, no, no!” she yelled and screamed and punched the cabin crew when they tried to restrain her. She couldn’t understand she was supposed to be flying on Air Canada and not on PanAm. Finally a ‘paddy-wagon’ came and took her away and that was the last we saw of her.
On another day, after our flight took off within a minute of BWIA (British West Indian Airways, now Caribbean Airlines). Diane and I were relaxing inside after a long stint at the counter out front, when suddenly we heard the PanAm pilot talking with the BWIA pilot. What we heard astounded us. Both jets were headed to New York and both pilots were betting each other as to which plane would reach New York first. They were speeding like kids in a drag race; only thing was they had the lives of their passengers in their hands. Unbelievable!
On another occasion, with everyone on board and the plane taxiing for take-off, the operations staff discovered they’d made an error in calculating the total weight on board. The aircraft was three times the safe weight allowance! The staff tried to call and warn the pilot, but it was too late for the plane to return – they were already in full throttle. At least trying to take off.
The overweight aircraft lumbered down the runway, every nut and bolt screaming as she lurched into the air at the very end of the runway. She barely made the lift-off. Barely. We could hardly breathe. Everyone was silent because things could have gone horribly wrong.
And things did go horribly wrong later that year when one of our passenger jets slammed into a mountain on the island of Montserrat in 1965, killing all on board (see Chapter 9).
The Hollywood Celebs
While working at the airport, part of my job was to meet and greet celebrity passengers who came in on PanAm and lead them into the VIP lounge where they received expedited services.
I remember when movie actress Claudette Colbert came in with a retinue of about a dozen people and an unbelievable amount of luggage. I was assigned to assist her and was shocked to hear her say to a companion “I thought you said these people would be barefoot and climbing trees!” I guess she had a lot to learn during her stay on the island.
And then there was Christopher Lee, the famous actor who, in several dark films, played the role of Dracula the vampire, aka Vlad Tepes. Very like the part he played, this actor, tall and slim, appeared solemn with a scary face. He did not react positively to our welcomes except in a dour way. Perhaps he did not have a good experience on the flight down. Who knows.
So different was Terry-Thomas, the famous gap-toothed British comedian and character actor. He was jolly, reacted happily to our welcomes and appreciated our specialized services.
All of the above celebs have long passed away, but meeting them up close and personal would always remain in my memory.
St Lawrence Gap, Hastings
In December of that year, my fiancé and I got married. I left the Cozier boardinghouse and we moved to a small bungalow in St Lawrence Gap, Hastings. Richard, our oldest child, was born in May of the following year. Sadly, while he was yet a baby, the abuse started.
You must understand that the events of the next few years are very difficult for me to write about. There was no one to turn to for help and, suffice to say, I went through a lot of make-up to hide the bruises on my face and arms. You may well ask why, well alcohol is the nectar of the devil. With just one drink, a loving husband turned from Dr Jekyll to the monster Hyde.
I was still with Pan American Airways, however they had a policy that any female staff member who became pregnant had to resign and reapply after the birth of the baby. I thus reapplied and got my job back.
How I met the Famous Cricketers
On rare occasions, especially on a Friday evening, my husband and I would have a night out at the Beau Brummel nightclub. He was a radio personality who personally knew all the famous cricketers.
I remember the evening we were at the nightclub when the Pakistan and West Indian (‘Windies’) teams came in. It could only have been at the end of the series as the cricketers were not allowed to go night-clubbing before or during a match.
In those days I followed the Windies matches and knew who the players were. It was an honour then to be introduced to the famous “Three W’s”, Weekes, Warrell and Walcott, as well as to the captain of the Pakistan team, the handsome Imran Khan, who many years later entered politics in his home country and became prime minister. I wish him well.
Tweedside Road, St Michael
In a matter of months, we found and moved to a small 3-bedroom bungalow at the top of Tweedside Road in Bridgetown, near to the traffic lights. This location, although not near to the beach as we’d been in Hastings, was a lot more convenient for both our jobs.
Unfortunately the house abutted a bakery and so we were overrun by enormous rats. I set a large trap each night and, in the hours before I turned in for the night, I would catch at least three huge rats, empty the trap and reset it. Perhaps we should have just got a cat to do the ‘dirty work’.
I soon found myself pregnant with our second child, Michelle, and gave birth at home. The attending midwife was shocked to see me moving easily about the house instead of lying in bed to have a baby. You see, I felt no pain at all except for the last three contractions. Inappropriately, my husband gave a party that night and, having just given birth that afternoon, I had to be up and about being the hostess.
With a second baby I could not reapply to PanAm. The airline was going bankrupt (although they swore it was just a rumour and not true). I therefore applied to BWIA and was immediately hired in their reservations office on Lower Broad Street, Bridgetown. We hired a very capable nanny and off I went to my new job.
BWIA
With numerous ticketing workshops ‘under my belt’, in no time at all I was in a supervisory position. In the 1960’s, ticketing was an intricate art and not the sum of one-way journeys as they are today. Without computers or even calculators, everything had to be done manually. With my training I was one of the few clerks who could ticket someone travelling around the world in a series of excursion back-to-back fares, each segment governed by its own rules and regulations. The IATA handbook was like a bible to airline reservation clerks.
If truth be told, I missed the excitement of working at Seawell Airport – the adrenalin rush as giant aircrafts landed and took off – the constant stream of scurrying passengers who came and went.
Independence!
What a wonderful experience it was in 1966 when Barbados became the fourth English-speaking country in the West Indies to achieve full independence from the United Kingdom.
No expense was spared for the celebrations. Bridgetown and the Careenage with its fishing fleet were all decorated with buntings and lights. There were parades and speeches and a floating stage was set up on which the singing group, The Supremes, would perform.
That evening we craned our necks trying to see Diana Ross as the three superstars sashayed in their tight fishtail evening gowns. Suddenly the immense crowd surged forward and security whisked the singers away before they could finish their song. I guess the government had to pay The Supremes a pretty penny for the non-performance!
The celebrations continued in the streets and something struck me as idiotic. It was something the people were shouting and that was “We’re free, we’re free! We don’t have to work any more!” For an island with the highest literacy rate in the Caribbean, a statement like that was too unreal. Over five decades later, I still hear those words in my mind.
The Mystery of the Moving Coffins
The old Chase burial vault is located on a high, windswept hill in Christ Church, near the village of Oistins. The following description of the moving coffins is taken from the Wikipedia website:
“The Chase Vault is a burial vault in the cemetery of the Christ Church Parish Church in Oistins, Christ Church, Barbados, and best known for a widespread legend of ‘mysterious moving coffins”.
According to the story, each time the heavily-sealed vault was opened in the early 19th century for burial of a family member, all of the lead coffins had changed position. The facts of the story are unverified, and skeptics call the tale historically dubious.
“The first published version of the story appeared in 1833 in James Edward Alexander’s Transatlantic Sketches. According to Alexander, a Mrs. Goddard was buried in the vault in 1807, followed in 1808 by Ann Maria Chase, and in 1812 by Dorcas Chase. When the vault was opened in late 1812 for the burial of Thomas Chase, the caskets of the Chase girls were said to be found ‘in a confused state, having been apparently tossed from their places’.
“Alexander wrote that when the vault was later opened to receive the body of another infant, the four coffins, all of lead, all very heavy, were much disturbed, and that similar disturbances were found when opening the vault for burials in 1816 and 1819: Each time that the vault was opened the coffins were replaced in their proper situations, that is, three on the ground side by side, and the others laid on them. The vault was then closed and the door (a massive stone which required six or seven men to move) was cemented by masons. Although the floor was of sand there were no marks of footsteps or water.
“The last time the vault was opened was in 1819. Lord Combermere was then present, and the coffins were found confusedly thrown about the vault, some with their heads down and others up. What could have occasioned this phenomenon? In no other vault in the island has this ever occurred. Was it an earthquake which occasioned it, or the effects of an inundation in the vault? Different versions of the story appeared over the years, with other accounts published in 1844 and 1860.”
Note: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the famous author, suggested that the cause might have been the spirits of the two family members, Dorcas and Thomas, who had committed suicide and thus were cursed. He observed that the coffins only started moving in 1812 after Dorcas Chase was buried in the vault.
Unfortunately modern day ghost hunters visiting the vault may be thwarted, because the Barbados governor ordered the coffins removed from the vault and buried in individual plots. The vault was then left open, unused, and is today a major tourist attraction. The mystery of the moving coffins has never been solved.
The Haunted Kitchen
This final story in the Barbados chapter is ongoing today, even as I write. It was sent to me by my younger sister Diane who is a travel consultant at one of the leading travel agencies there.
Diane arrives at her office early and opens up the office. She then heads for the kitchen to start the coffee machine going. Before she enters the kitchen however, she hears noises in the kitchen that sound like the banging of pots and pans, but on entering, she finds all to be calm and undisturbed. This is a daily occurrence.
On making enquiries as to the phenomenon, my sister was told that the previous owner of the property was a Mrs Greenland who apparently loved her kitchen when she was alive. Not having found peace in the afterlife, Mrs Greenland’s ghost still makes a ruckus in what was once her kitchen.
Diane now does the respectful thing. When she enters the haunted kitchen, she calls out “Good morning, Mrs Greenland! How are you?” Let’s hope the ghost never answers her, or the shock might turn her hair gray in an instant!
Goodbye Barbados!
One evening my husband and I had a particularly nasty fight. I’d cooked dinner but had accidently put a little too much salt in it. After hurling each Pirex dish into the wall, he went to the fridge to find something else to eat but there was very little there. Everything in the fridge – milk, orange juice, eggs and bread were all thrown to the floor in a rage.
Our son was in his highchair and he started crying. My husband grabbed him and threw the baby against the wall. Fighting back tears while cleaning up the mess and calming our son, was when I realised I had to leave. But how? Many times my life had been threatened if I ever tried to leave.
Next morning, while waiting on the nanny to arrive, on impulse I called a taxi and the babies and I rode to the airport. We had no luggage, no supplies, only the clothes we were wearing. I had on my BWIA uniform. The counter clerk wrote up staff travel, one-way tickets to Antigua on the next north-bound flight, and a pass for travel on LIAT to St Kitts. It seemed the entire company knew of my domestic troubles and sympathy was on my side.
With my tail between my legs, we moved in with my parents and younger siblings at “Shirley House”. My parents were kind enough not to say “I told you so!” for which I was extremely grateful. I stayed with my family and, in a matter of months, the Dias family was on the move again, this time to a little island I’d hardly ever heard of – Montserrat.

It is unfortunate that over the last ten years, the travel industry has had to tackle terrorism, SARS, tsunamis, flu virus, swine flu, as well as the first ever real global tough economy. I wrote this bio/anthology, “Dancing with the Dead – Growing up in the Caribbean with Ghosts and Ghouls” so I wouldn’t forget the weird things that happened to me and my family in the seven islands of the Caribbean in which we lived and grew up. I wanted to show that these beautiful islands were not all about sand, sea and sun. They all have a ‘dark side’, most times not talked about. I remember the old, old lady who lived across the street from us in Dagenham, Montserrat. She was passing our house. I went down our steps, said hello and asked her if she put up a jumbie table at Christmas. A look of horror came over her face and she took off at a run – an old lady running away from truth. The jumbie table is a weird display of Christmas food and drink put out on Christmas Eve for the family ghosts, not for the family itself. It is still done here.
